Buckeye Line happenings, Columbus, Ohio

Unread post by strugglin »

I don't often post anymore, but felt it might be of some interest that CSX has begun using the Buckeye Line again in Columbus, Ohio. I live off 5th Ave in Columbus between the Buckeye Line and the CSX Scottslawn Secondary, and since EHH first took over CSX last year, the train counts on both lines by me had dwindled, and in the case of the Buckeye Line had vansished all together after the abolishment of Q022/123 in June 2017, and the sad news of the end of the Ringling Brothers Circus Trains, which when in Columbus would use the Buckeye Line to stage the trains in Grandview Yard.

Since June 2017, I had gone almost 6 months without a train on the Buckeye Line, until one night in November 2017, a detoured/rerouted Q355, now intermodal which services Ashtabula, somehow ended up on the Buckeye Line, I assume going to Buckeye Yard to pickup intermodal cars, and blocked the Trabue Road crossing nearly 3 hours while waiting on a Q311 to come north up the Scottslawn Secondary through CP Mounds.

Fast forward to last week, when I was shocked to hear a horn at the 5th Ave crossing, and to see a new Q390 intermodal heading east from Buckeye Yard towards downtown, where it would take the Burt Line north. I was informed that Q390/391 are now back to using the Buckeye Line effective this week, whereas up until now since the origin of these trains, they were running Willard-Fostoria-Marion-Ridgeway and back to reach Buckeye Yard from the north.

I have yet to see a Q391 on the Buckeye Line, they may be running overnight, but for the last week, Q390 has been departing Buckeye Yard around 6-8pm, and coming through Grandview just after dark.

I know some people on here may be more in the know then me, so I'd appreciate any info on the schedule of Q390/391 or when to expect any trains on the Buckeye Line in the future.

Also if anyone has a current list of trains that run the Scottslawn Secondary, especially those that run between Columbus-Hillard by my place south of CP Craft I believe, the lead into the north end of Buckeye Yard, that would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I would also be interested in the Scottslawn line as I live fairly close and lately I've been hearing a fair amount of trains. Its possible this is just the winter in which I can hear them better but seems like a lot more.

kwh, I know Q310/311 mixed freights are back running on the Scottslawn, there used to be unit coal trains coming from Illinois going south to North Carolina, but I haven't seen those in a while. There should be like an H795 local also, and then whatever current intermodal trains come in and out of Buckeye Yard at the north end, not sure if you are located north or south of CP Craft.

I was working on the replacement CSX bridge on 3rd avenue last fall in Columbus. Found some cool stuff while digging along the tracks.

Coal Trains still ply the CSX Scottslawn Sub as seen from my school bus last monday passing overhead on I270 near Hilliard. Also saw another one three weeks ago so there still around.

Q390 departed Buckeye Yard at 6pm tonight with BNSF 6642 as the leader, Q391 just came west through Grandview now heading to Buckeye Yard 9:30pm.

Saturday at Noon caught a local with 3115 running long hood forward pulling 1 load of lumber and about 10 hoppers northbound into the siding at RT161 near Plain City. Just as it pulled into the siding a southbound coal train was on the main headed south it stopped for 15-20 minutes before continuing south towards grandview.
