EL west of Elgin
Hey everyone,
My question is: When were the rails pulled out from just west of Elgin to Glenmore? I was looking back through my old photos in 2001 and noticed it was still in to just west of Glenmore. I have photos of every city including all the sidings and elevators. Do you remember the diamond that was still there for years in Ohio City with the Cloverleaf? It was still there in 01. When I returned to that stretch last weekend, it had obviously been torn out from a point just west of Elgin and west.
Thanks for any information!

When was the NYC route through Ohio City taken out?
Re: EL west of Elgin
Early eighties. Spencerville and Elgin operated to Rockford for a brief time.ABB1501 wrote:When was the NYC route through Ohio City taken out?

Re: EL west of Elgin
You can thank Van Wert County Commissioners for that decision. Their rationale was to take out the track and use it to build the track to the new "mega site" industrial park north of town. Van Wert has hopes of landing the "big one" in terms of industry development, basically the big 500 plus employee industry.railohio wrote:Summer 2010
Sadly, that is not likely going to happen, so, hopefully some smaller, rail served industries can go in too.

None of the track material that was used to build the Supersite track came from the former SPEG, KenCG Tower wrote:You can thank Van Wert County Commissioners for that decision. Right you are Ken. Some people just don't know it all,EH.
Re: EL west of Elgin
I would have to believe that Van Wert has a better chance at landing Industry then Glenmore would ? West of Elgin was just going to rot.. sad but true !

Re: EL west of Elgin
Not claiming "I know it all", just restating what was told to me by the Van Wert County Economic Development folks. Perhaps they had it wrong, but I would think they, of all people, would have had the right information. So please lead me to the correct information versus throwing negative comments. It's called a conversation folks, a process which seems to lack in our society and especially on rail road boards such as this one.
And while it may not have been rail for rail, its very likely the monies from scrap helped.
So enlighten me...what was the rationale for ripping out the SPEG?
Secondly, does Van Wert have a better shot then Glenmore? I don't know....I can tell you that big industries want a lot of land on the cheap with no strings attached. So which area has a better fit for that? Yes, Van Wert has the infrastructure in place, but that all comes at a cost...just depends on the industry.
So lets talk instead of playing the "he said, she said" game. Sound fair?

Seems to me that Van Wert is "whale hunting" with their site - problem is that there aren't any more whales left to hunt for....

Re: EL west of Elgin
Well, I went ahead and scanned in 4 of the 2001 Ohio City photos if you are interested. The EL main is still "intact" at this point with just the diamond remaining from the Cloverleaf.

Re: EL west of Elgin
Three different views of BY. The first is in 1997 when the "EL" went on across both the B&O and N&W. The 2001 views are when the diamonds were just removed.
