Railfanning in Northwood, OH (Vikers)

Unread post by Delightful Trains »

Now that the weather is starting to warm up, I'm looking at taking a railfan trip down to Northwood, OH (Vikers) to see a good amount of NS and CSX traffic near the diamond. Does anyone have an idea if there is a good day of the week/ good time of day to see the most traffic? I know the NS Chicago Line brings the majority of traffic and the CSX line is also pretty busy, just wondering if there is a best time of day/ week to set up and get some good action.

I'm not sure about the best times to be at Vickers, but I posted on this site a few years back on my experience there. I stop there occasionally on my way home (I live in Michigan) from Deshler and Fostoria. I'm sure you do, but please stay off railroad property there. I, unbeknownst to me, was being watched by NS Police one time. I always stay by my car on the pavement on the dead end roads there. Eventually he approached me and was very nice to me and appreciative of the fact that I didn't trespass. He even gave me a heads up about an approaching train. Enjoy!

Alrighty, thanks for the heads up! Always have to be careful of staying off railroad property, never know when you're being watched :)

I've had the police show up and ask me what I was doing at Vickers as well. Nothing came of it but the officer chatted with me for a while and didn't exactly make me feel welcome.

I have another question about Railfanning in the Toldeo area :?:

Is there a good time of day/ week that the Wheeling and Lake Erie runs up to Toledo? It would be a blast to chase this shortline railroad, so any information is greatly appreciated.

Hi Bellevue native here, Yes there are many ways to find this train and Yeoman Siding is a good place to start. Located on the east side of Bellevue paraelling route 20. The remote controlled two long mile siding is the first harbinger of wheeling track ownership and you can find the trains being placed if in siding facing east idling either with crews to head east, without crews, sometimes the crews bring their trains here and drop and go back to hartland. Also they have been known to bring trains in and split them apart or combine them. If in yard you can find them near the pit or if their lined up into yard look for them in the wheeling connection, the other track that goes beyond the yeoman siding west and onto the bellevue terminal is called the lakeshore connection. You can either find the power of the long wb at either monroe st or madden st. Klines siding is another place to look for them or along the toledo line to toledo.
Exit stage left
