Grand Trunk Western

Unread post by atrainguy60 »

Set in the same universe as the L&SM, the GTW succeeded in buying part of the Milwaukee Road in the 1980's; making a deal with the SOO, the GTW received the CHI-KC line, and the line up the Mississippi from Sabula, IA to La Crescent, MN. SOO got the rest, namely Bensenville Yard and the main line through Wisconsin and into the Twin Cities, with GTW having trackage rights into the Twin Cities. GTW survived on through the 90's and into present day, where it is now a big modern railroad with access to many of the major cities in the midwest. It still has close connections with Canadian National, and CN runs some trains to Chicago. It should be noted that the GTW has trimmed some lines over the years, such as the Durand to Muskegon and Greenville lines, and the Thumb lines. It still owns the lines to the Saginaw area, giving it direct access to DOW chemical and the Consumers Energy Plant. It also shed the old DT&I south of Flat Rock.

Impressive research! Here are some current frequencies of the 600 Series Coal trains

600 - Chicago, IL to Bay City, MI - 2x per week, 6 mo. per year.
601 - Bay City, MI to Chicago, IL - As Needed
602 - Chicago, IL to Lansing, MI - Every 3 days
603 - Lansing, MI to Chicago, IL - As Needed
604 - Chicago, IL to Monroe, MI - 7x per week
605 - Monroe, MI to Chicago, IL - As Needed
606 - Chicago, IL to Erie, MI - 1x per week
607 - Erie, MI to Chicago, IL - As Needed
608 - Chicago, IL to Lansing, MI - Every 10-11 days
609 - Lansing, MI to Chicago, IL - As Needed

If you want some extra fun add a daily coal train from Chicago to Port Huron for the St. Clair power plants. CSX gets the eastern coal but perhaps your GTW can get the western coal.
PatC created a monster, 'cause nobody wants to see Don Simon no more they want AARR I'm chopped liver, well if you want AARR this is what I'll give ya, bad humor mixed with irrelevant info that'll make you roll your eyes quicker than a ~Z~ banhammer...

Thanks for additional info on the coal trains! I think I'll do what you suggested about the coal trains for St Clair. I did briefly wonder about that power plant, but I didn't think about moving western coal to it. This way, both my railroads can have the business.

This and the L&SM are kinda based off of some "what if" scenarios I've thought about before. Such as, "what if GTW succeeded in merging with the MILW" or "what if the former PM line from Midland to Baldwin was still in place". It's fun imagining what things would be like today if history went a different direction.

I do the same thing. I haven't updated my paper railroads on this board in a long time but I do so at home :)

I just edited the train list and added two trains to the list: 112 and 113. These trains were previously Q131 and Q132 on CSX, but GTW and KCS have won over the traffic. The trains will be interchanged between GTW and KCS at Kansas City.

A large grain elevator facility is scheduled to be completed this June in Washington, IA. This facility began ground breaking last May, and has a 5,000,000 million bushel capacity. Located on the GTW Chicago to KC main, near Ottumwa, the sidings will allow for outbound 90 car grain trains, as well as occasional inbound fertilizer trains. Most of the grain will be sent to the KCS in Kansas City, to be exported into Mexico, although some grain will be taken to Chicago for interchange with other railroads. The GTW plans to receive some potash traffic from CP at St Paul. It is also negotiating with the L&SM about interchanging Potash in Port Huron.

Train Updates-

103 no longer runs daily, and now will run as needed as an empty autorack train on it's original routing. 102 will continue daily, taking loaded autoracks from Flint and Flat Rock to Toledo, via Diann Jct.

Also, due to the swelling business on CN's two intermodals(500 and 501), CN will be adding another pair of intermodals, running between Chicago and Toronto. These will be numbered 502 and 503, with the rest of their GTW train numbers being bumped. These trains will run as 510 and 511 on GTW. They start May 1st.

I'm not very familiar with the original GTW roster, so I'm gonna try base it off the GT Blue roster thread. It may be a bit rough...
