C&CI

Unread post by DT&I »

The C&CI came to be in 1988 when a group of investors purchased the CCC&St.L line from Chicago to Cincinnati via Indianapolis. An agreement with the BN had been reached prior to purchasing the line to move intermodal from Indy to Chicago for the BN to move the the west coast. The line was completely 10 mph running north of Indy and maintenance would need to be need to be done in the near future.

A new agreement in the spring of 1989 with Conrail was reached to use the C&CI as a detour to Chicago in case of a derailment somewhere along the line. The line had the capacity with two mile long sidings in some places. The agreement was for 4 trains a day at a set rate and an extra price for each additional train.

The investors saw immediately that local traffic around Indy on the Chicago District would be very profitable and an effort was made to attract more business to the line by demonstrating quality and reliable local service. The line north of Brant Jct. ran through an industrial park which was estimated to generate 20+ cars a day. The Cincy District split off of Conrail at IU and went south through Hill Yard which it was decided had the room for intermodal storage and loading/unloading.

On August 1st, 1992 the first intermodal train ran from Hill Yard to the BN in Chicago with leased CNW power. As of this time the entire roster was made up of lease power but four and six axle power was on the way.

By 1995 leased power was gone and the C&CI paint scheme had taken over. When the BNSF merger happened the agreement for intermodal to Indy had been extended for another 15 years and added 2 trains a day. In 1999 CSX opted to continue using the agreement reached with Conrail in 1989. Since then traffic has grown and today in 2014 the line is now up to 30 MPH and signaled.

CCI has purchased 6 C30S-7R's from Ferrosur to handle a growth in traffic and are expected to finally replace the SD45's still on the property which have been sitting in Moorefield Yard for 4 years. Some of the SD45's have been sub lettered for LTEX but have been lettered like that before they were retired so their future is uncertain.

C&CI 723, 727, and 728 have been pulled from the deadline at Moorfield Yard and are sitting at the end of the spur at the north end of the yard. The rumor about these is they will be taken to NRE Silvis and be rebuilt into SD40M-3's to replace the aging C30-7 fleet.

C&CI 311-317 have been stored in Moorfield Yard for the better half of a year and have had tarps placed over them.

C&CI 723, 727, and 728 have been picked up by CSX and are now off property, 724, 725, and 730 are now set to be picked up and have their waybills to NRE Silvis. The Ex-FSRR C30S-7R's are now being used as a part sources for the aging but well maintained C30-7 fleet. The SD45's are set to be rebuilt to SD40M-2's and be temporary replacements for the SD40-2's as they are set to be upgraded as well.

C&CI 724, 725, and 730 are now also gone, 734, 736, and 737 are now waiting to be picked up. All of the C30-7's are now in storage around the shops in Indy awaiting an uncertain fate at this time.
