A third NGS-1D has rolled out of the shops. This will become MNTX #93. #94 will roll out tomorrow. #95 will roll out next Monday.

The next phase in the NGS-program will be the NGS-1W. This is a wide cab version of the NGS-1D. They will fill out #96-99.
Now to the shop updates:

#4515 is in shops for a tire change.
#2 is in shops for major inspections (will not run until Feb. 2014.)
#50 has GPS reset and will leave shops tomorrow.
#1 is in the paint shed for repainting (from MNTX 1 to CLW switcher 1)
#90 in shops for broken fan belt.

restoration/upgrade/overhaul updates:
2197 has been remunbered to MN 100. Now classified as a Y6c. test run will be next month.

Our Chief mechanic has advised us that our diesel are not going to be on the roster very long. Most are 50-60 years old and are worn out from both their use on class 1 roads and continued use on the M&N. Although the M&N has been staying true (to some extent) an all steam road, we will be ordering 5 ES44ACs, 2 AC4400CWs, and a ES40DC. These will be kept in Pittsburg for the Chicago bound trains. We hope that because they will be brand new enginesm they will last a while. The 5 ES44ACs will replace the SD9s that have been serving their home territory for almost 60 years, the AC4400CWs are replacing a pair of E-8s (they will be rebuilt into CE-8s) and the ES40DC will be replacing a SD24. Like the diesels they are replacing, they will wear basic black with yellow walkways and yellow lettering. The ES44ACs will be #500-504, the AC4400CWs are 505-506, and ES40DC is #507. They should be delivered by July. The old, battle worn engines won't be scrapped, they will be put on reserve or put on the deadline, possibly may be put up for sale.

The first of 5 ES44ACs have been delivered. MN 500 was originally going to be a BNSF unit, but was scratched from their order. AC4400CW 505 has also arrived. 505 was GECX 4400, the AC44 demo unit. Temporarily it still wears its demo paint scheme, but with MN reporting marks.

another 2-6-6-6 will be joining the roster later this year. But this is not a C&O engine. This other 2-6-6-6 is a ex-Virginian AG-class "Blue Ridge" type. The only other Alleghenies that were not C&O locomotives. It will join the the Allegheny on the SandPatch grade.

Y6b 2197 has been successfully converted to a Y6c. Its is now M&N 100 and will be tested over the next 2 weeks. If all goes right, 100 will be a base of design for the powerful Y7a. The Y6c has the same dimenstions as a Y6b, but has a higher horsepower (Y6b: 5600hp Y6c: 6200). The Y7a will be designed to put out 7000-7800hp. Planning for a Y7b is in the works. It will have 7800-8000hp. #100 will be tested on heavy coal drags from Cumberland to the Allegheny Mine just east of McKeesport, PA

Due to the smoke and fumes a steam locomotive gives off, the EPA has told us to stop all steam operations. Now keeping the M&Ns all steam roster in running order, all engines are at the shops to be converted to burn Biodiesel. However, this is a special form of Biodiesel. Because of the intense heat in the fireboxes, this more refined biodiesel will burn hotter, and actually cleaner than regular biodiesel. This is already fueling the NGS-series steam engines and because of this, they are still allowed to run. To keep our fast, reliable schedules, the M&N is using its reserve and active diesel rosters, as well as leased power from the Norfolk Southern and CSX Transportation. Our new power, which are 2 ES44ACs, 1 AC4400CW, and 1 ES40C, are now being used system wide. The steam locomotives will return sometime later this year and as late as February 2014. As of this moment (3/27/13) there are only 3 active steam engines, AC-12s #51 and 52, and Y6b #50.

The last steamer has been pulled from operation due to the EPA restriction. Fortunately, our locomotive maintainence department and an Oil company (who will remain anonymous) are developing a specially refined biodiesel for our steam locomotives. Its is the same fuel that the NGS-series engines burn, but they burn at a relatively low temperature, due to their small boilers. This special biodiesel will have to be as clean as the bd burned by the NGS engines, but can be burned at a higher temperature.

The first converted steamer will be MNTX 54, a 4-8-8-4 Bigboy that was converted to oil late last year. So far, the firing tests with the specially refined Biodiesel have proved a success. The Oil company supplying our fuel will still remain anonymous, and they will provide the biodiesel. A offload dock will be built in Baltimore and 2 tank trains will be added to list for transport of the fuel to the locomotive replenishing stations throughout the system. #54 is expected to begin operations in May.

In other news:
NGS-1D #90 is in shops for tire replacement.
NGS-1D #94 is in shops for new mainrod on driver set 2, engineer side.
