Hello.

Since steam locomotives seem to be your specialty, we have a request for you.

We need an MLW CP H-1b 4-6-4 for our passenger trains.

Ever since we merged with the North Carolina Railroad, we have the need for a steam locomotive to run our first passenger train from Asheville, to Raleigh, and Down to Conway, SC. We hope you can build something like this, as we need it within the next few months.

Thank you,
The Team at the Carolina Southern Railroad.

Starting next Monday, the Cumberland shops will build another steam locomotive from the ground up. The locomotive is a 4-6-4 Hudson built in the style of a CP H-1b for the Carolina Southern Railroad. The Canadian Pacific railroad has provided schematics of a H-1b.

Waiting for steel from Pittsburg to begin building CS locomotive.

NGS-1W mockup is finished, it will used for sound and vibration tests. It is a full scale model of the NGS-1W locomotive, but is unpowered. Aftertests, it will be sent to the M&N sponsored Baltimore City Rail Museum.

The Carolina Southern Hudson has a complete frame and boiler is now being built.
NGS-1W #96 is under construction.
The last steamer is getting the coal filter installed. All steamers will return to the rails on May 6. Diesels will start to be pulled from active roster to reserve in 2 weeks. The GEVos, Dash-8s, and Dash-9s will be assigned to Chicago line. The passenger diesels will also be kept at Pittsburgh Union station to haul the Capitol Limited to Chicago.

Shop Updates:
C&O 500 will not be rebuilt to operation condition. After a thorough inspection, the boiler has been deemed unfit for steam. #500 will be donated to the Baltimore City Railroad Museum. However, a scrapyard near Roanoke, Va has something like the M-1 and will be sent up here in June.
PRR 6200 has a new turbine impeller. She has also been converted to oil and will conduct roadtests in late May.
The construction of Y7c #901 will start in June.
Y6c #2197 ha been renumbered to MNTC 900
NGS-1D #96 will be completed as NGS-1W #96 after testing is finished on the mock-up.

2 steamers from the CSE will be coming to the shops for restoration. The 2 engines are a 2-8-0 and a 4-6-2. The 2-8-0 is only being cosmetically restored while the 4-6-2 will be restored to running condition.

Shop switcher to pull CLWX 30 from the storage track. The tractions motors for C&O 500 will go on this units. 4 more motors have been ordered.

A pair of ex-NYC Baldwin RF-16s will be stored until the Mt. Clare shops have room in the main hall.

PRR S-2 6200 will be making a test run tomorrow test out a new turbine clutch and reverse turbine.

The shops will build 2 experimental, high-horsepower locomotive to augment the coal fleet. 1 unit will be a larger version of the NGS-series. It will be called the NGS-2. The NGS-1 had a 4-4-4-2 wheel arrangement. The NGS-2 will have a 4-6-6-2 arrangment. Unlike the 1-series, the 2-series will not be built for speed, it will be built for slow, heavy loads. The 2-series will generate 8,000 continuous horsepower.
The second engine is a streamlined passenger locomotive for the Capitol Limited. The engine will have a topspeed of 85mph and will have 72in drivers. The NGS-2 is nearing completion while the streamliner is still on the drawing board.

PRR 6200 has passed the tests and will be placed into service along side the NGS-1Ds in high-priority roadrailers. The turbine will retain its lettering and number, but will be refered as MNTX 6200. It is now Class ST-1. 2 more ST-1s will be built over the next year. These will be MNTX 6201 and 6202. A streamlined version will be built as Class ST-2, numbered 6203.

The NGS-2 has been put hold for the time being.

The Chessie System is delivering our 1840's B&O equipment for the monthly inspections. Because of the age of the rolling stock and locomotives, we have to perform inspections once a month to make sure they are in good shape. The locomotives are the Tom Thumb (built 1830) and Atlantic (built 1832). The cars are an 1842 built iron hopper, and 2 wooden stagecoach passenger cars.

We will be conducting test runs on our 1840's equipment to make sure they are in good condition. They will only be runningn around the shop complex and may go as far as Mexico at the eastern yard limits. These will run again on July 4th on trips between Mt.Clare and Ellicott City.
