CSX's former Baltimore & Ohio line between North Vernon, Indiana, and Wapakoneta, Ohio, is today part of the Chicago Division and has seen an increase in traffic since the Conrail split in 1999. Several trains use the Alton Sub in its entirety, but trains like Q132 and J735 use the connection with the former Conrail Indy Line in Winchester, Indiana, to reach points north like Toledo and Detroit, as well as points west like Avon and St. Louis.

The Alton Subdivision begins at the former site of AK Tower in Wapakoneta, Ohio. This is where the line breaks away from the Toledo Subdivision and begins the run southwest to North Vernon. The Alton Sub crosses and connects with the Indy Line just east of Winchester at WN Tower. A connection in the northwest quadrant allows for moves on and off the Indy Line. Just north of Alton is the diamond with Norfolk Southern's New Castle District. The yard in Alton hosts a pair of locals and also sees work from Q630 and Q631. South of Alton is the diamond and connection with the Miller Branch, worked by J712. Further south, the Alton Sub crosses over the CIND mainline on a bridge near Corwick. Corwick is also the start of the steep climb up Kendall Hill for northbounds. In the B&O days, heavy northbounds had rear-end helpers attached for the 15-mile shove up to Kendall. The climb isn't as steep for southbounds approaching Kendall. From Corwick to North Vernon, the line follows Gaully Creek and crosses over it several times. Once in North Vernon, the line dumps into the Indiana Subdivision with wyes to the east and west directions. South of North Vernon, the former B&O line is no longer in use.
