Eastern Transportation

Unread post by davidcarter2 »

Eastern Transportaion (ET), Eastern Leasing (EAXX) and Eastern Electrical and Repair (EARX)

The carrier traces its beginnings back to the Kings Mountain Railroad that ran from Chester, South Carolina, to York, South Carolina, before the Civil War.

The Kings Mountain Railroad was begun in 1855 but was destroyed the Union Army during the War Between the States and was not rebuilt after the conflict.

The route lay abandoned for almost eight years until the creation of the Chester and Lenoir Narrow Gauge Railroad in 1873.

Within a decade the Chester & Lenoir had extended the line to Lenoir, North Carolina. At over 120 miles, the Chester & Lenoir was the largest narrow gauge railroad in the Carolinas.

Over the next decade, the railroad operated under the umbrella of the Richmond and Danville Railroad.

When the Richmond and Danville was re-organized as the Southern Railway In 1894, the Chester & Lenoir operated on its own for a short while. By 1896, it went into receivership, and the following year was re-organized as the Carolina & North-Western Railway.

Though technically controlled by the Southern, this shortline carrier, more than any other in the Southern Railway family, was allowed to operate almost autonomously.

By 1902, the Carolina & North-Western Railway was converted to standard gauge track, and it purchased a controlling interest in a logging railroad, the Caldwell & Northern, that ran from Lenoir to Colletsville, North Carolina.

By 1906, the railroad had been expanded to Edgemont, North Carolina, making the line nearly 150 miles long, further increasing access to the timber in the mountains north and west of Hickory, North Carolina.

In 1912, new shops were built in Hickory and within 10 years a locomotive was even built within the railroad’s shops.

In 1940 a new was agreed upon for the Carolina & North-Western Railway to become independent but remained finacially bound to southern.

By 1948, the carrier had completely dropped steam and replaced it with diesel locomotives. The Carolina & North-Western was one of the first completely dieselized railroads in the southeast.

In 1979 with fiancial troubles for the southern, Carolina & North-Western Railway purchased the rights to the Crescent(1) and the former Southerner(2) and all track rights for those trains. Today the trains are run by amtrak with ownership of the trains residing with Eastern Transportation

In 1982 Southern was placed under control of the Norfolk Southern Corporation, along with the Norfolk and Western Railway (N&W) and was renamed Norfolk Southern Railway in 1990

In 1991 Carolina & North-Western Railway financially and officially separated from norfolk southern

With 1993 looming a plan be need to bring much revenue into the system a plan was laid for new shops to repair, overhaul and paint locomotives in Lenoir, NC. With assistance from EMD,GE, Norfolk Southern and CSX. The first of the shops opened in 1995 with the final portions operation by 1997.

Eastern purchased the Aberdeen and Rockfish Railroad in 1999.

The North carolina railroad ( An all passenger service ) Was purchased in 2001 with agreements to run no freight ( At this time ) and to provide an ample upgrade to the passenger service to North Carolina.

In 2007 Eastern Transportation lobbied against a new google data plant in lenoir, NC and eventually settled to help them setup in hickory, NC well away from the tracks lines.

in 2011 Eastern purchased the Carolina Southern Railroad due to their overwhelming financial losses

With a new backer in 2012 Eastern looks to rapid growth along the eastern coast and more.

The only guy in the south is legostudios and all his tracks were in Georgia the last I knew. Don't know of any of our lines that have tracks in the Carolinas. He's got my vote for membership :)

Have entered negotiations with CP for the following CP SD60's(20) - 6225, 6228-29, 6240-43, 6245, 6250, 6252, 6255, 6258, 6260, 6025, 6035, 6040-41, 6047-48 and 6050 All are EX- Soo.

Also in talks with CSX for 10 AC6000CW's

Have purchased outright all SD60's ( 22 ) from GATX 9013-14, 9030, 9033, 9035, 9037,9041, 9043, 9045, 9053, 9055-56, 9059, 9060, 9066, 9069, 9071, 9077-76, 9078-79, 9086-87, 9092, 9095. All units are EX Oakway Leasing.

These large purchases had to be made to show CSX and NS that we Would be good partners ( Owners ) in a route from Charleston,SC to Birmingham,AL. Essentially This would give up a port to port route in which to both receive and send goods. It is essential that Eastern get a good route to set the market for its customers goods for without them we are nothing.

Canadian pacific has agreed to our terms to buy their sd60's. They are getting them ready and will be contacting us by friday on their state for final finacial changes if needed.

CSX has also agrees to let us by 10 of their ac6000cw's. They will be arriving in Charlotte by Monday at the latest.

Norfolk southern has granted us a right of way from Hickory, NC to Charlotte, NC. We are still pushing with csx to see if we can the shorter route, but this is progress.
