Flood update:

Word from the crew at Greencastle is that they have had to stop work on the line because Black Walnut Creek is rising back close to flood stage again so the crews relunctly retreated back to Fillmore for the night. They will go out and check it tomorrow to see if the river level will allow them to do anymore work on it or not. They did get the first approach to the bridge repaired and they were working on the supports for the bridge when the water level started rising again, but at least they managed to make a little progress on it.

Up in Michigan the Grand River and Thornapple creek are both expected to fall below flood stage tomorrow, so work to reopen the Grand Rapids Branch should be able to continue full steam. The washouts on both sides of the bridge in Dutton were repaired today and the crews are moving down to Middleville to start work on repairing the washouts and replacing the bridge over the river there. Crews were able to get the washouts repaired at Hopkins on the Kalamazoo Branch, allowing the railroad to reopen the line again. The branch local, WJGR-1, will be reinstated to run at its normal time starting tomorrow.

Flood update 4/25:

The Kalamazoo Branch reopened for business today, the WJGR-1 local was able to get out and run its full route for the first time since a week ago. The crews on the Grand Rapids Branch have finally gotten the bridge repaired at Middleville and are heading to Hastings next to take care of the severe washouts and bridgeouts there. With the progress being made, management is hopeful the entire line can be reopened by the end of this weekend. We returned one empty ballast train to the MQT and the second one will be interchanged to them tonight. The third one will head out to the work crews tomorrow.

While the work crews at Greencastle couldn't attack the line repairs like they wanted due to the water level, we were able to send out a smaller workforce who was able to stabilize and strengthen the bridge piers, at least allowing a train to cross it again for now. It is going to be replaced with a brand new bridge once the flooding threat subsides. Since work cannot be completed on it, this pushes the reopening of the line into next week now. The Richmond Branch is still out and won't be touched until the Greencastle line is repaired.

Flood update 4/28:

Crews finished up the last of the washout repairs on the Grand Rapids Branch today and the line will be reopened to trains starting at 12:01am 4/29. The GRCI/CIGR will no longer have to detour through Ft. Wayne to get to Grand Rapids anymore and the local will run for the first time in over a week.

Down in central Indiana, flood waters went down enough on Friday for work crews to get busy with repairing all the washouts and stuff on the line thru Greencastle. The brand new bridge at Greencastle was installed yesterday and all the washouts were repaired up to Reelsville, where crews are installing another new bridge to replace the one that got damaged in the flood. The rest of the repairs should be finished by tomorrow afternoon, allowing PC to finally reopen its St. Louis mainline again for the first time in almost two weeks. Management would like to thank CSX for allowing us to detour over their mainline during this difficult time. And also, the CSX detours have ended as the Wabash River has fallen just enough to allow CSX to reopen their bridge at Clinton, IN on the C&EI. Once the crews finish with this project, we will shift them over to Richmond and get them ready to work on repairing the washouts to the Richmond Branch, which barring any future flooding, should be finished by the end of this coming week.

Starting May 1, PC will begin taking delivery of brand new locomotives from HPLB(45CWDC and AC). This will cause us to place our 68 C44-9W's and 10 of our AC4400CW's(6151-6200, 6600-6601, 6603-6619, 6631-6640) into storage. The rest of the AC400CW fleet(100 units) is also targeted for storage. We also put into storage SD70M's 6626-6630 and SD70MAC 6620-6625. None of these units are for sale or lease at the moment, I will update on here when and if either of those options happen.

Today the Grand Rapids Branch reopened for rail traffic for the first time in over almost two weeks. The GRCI/CIGR trains finally were able to run their normal route and the WJGR-1 local train was able to finally get out and service the industries on the route for the first time. A second local train, WJGR-3, ran extra out of Jackson to Grand Rapids to ensure that all the industries got switched today.

Crews have finished up repairing the last few washouts near Knightsville and once the work and ballast trains return to Indianapolis, the St. Louis mainline thru Greencastle will reopen for the first time in a couple weeks as well. PC would like to again thank CSX for allowing us to detour our St. Louis trains on its parallel route during the flooding and subsequent rebuilding. Tomorrow the work trains and track crews will head east to Richmond, IN where they will be staged for Wednesday morning to start tackling the rebuild work on the Richmond Branch from Elwood to Kokomo.

Flood update, crews are out repairing washouts on the only remaining line that suffered flood damage and hadn't been repaired yet, the Richmond Branch. The crews finished up in Elwood today and are heading to Kokomo tomorrow and hope to have the line reopened by Sunday.

In other news, Poet opened its brand new ethanol plant in Churubusco, IN yesterday. PC assisted by rebuilding 8 miles of the Vandale Secondary to serve this new plant and delivered a unit train of grain hoppers, symbol UCU-21, for its first delivery of corn. The first ethanol train is planned to head out of the plant tomorrow, its symbol will be UET-100. An empty train of tank cars was delivered today, symbol EET-190, to be ready for loading. PC anticipates a lot of business from this new plant with unit ethanol and grain trains planned on an almost daily basis.

PC announced that in spite of the losses suffered from the flooding, rail replacement projects on the Ft. Wayne line and Cloverleaf lines will still go on as planned next month. Critical passing sidings will be installed on the Cloverleaf as well during this project.

I love reading your lists, they are well organized. One thing though, ICE and DME are TSCR now. So you got TSCR power on that train.

We're ready to start the first delivery of 45-CWACs and DCs. We have 32 of the DC model and 18 of the AC model. The first two cuts of ten are already on their way to Chattanooga where NS will send them wherever you need them. We'll be delivering these first 50 as sets of 10, and then we'll make deliveries of 5 or 6 every week (as we build them) until the rest of the order is finished.

Another construction project has been announced to start next month, and that is the extension of the double track on the GR&I Branch from Howe, IN up Kalamazoo, MI. This will include adding signals and CTC to what is now currently an all dark single track TT/TO line. This will be an ongoing project that is projected to be completed by next summer. Work will be done in such a way that it does not massively disrupt train traffic on the line and work windows may be implemented for part of the project, such as to install cross overs as an example.

Also announced today was that the entire fleet of C44-9W's(all 68), and AC4400CW's(all 110) will be placed into storage and transferred over to the brand new subsidiary, Penn Central Leasing Co(PCLX). The units are going to be rounded up and placed into storage at Conway, Buckeye, and Piqua yards to be relettered PCLX, which will take the rest of the month. The units are projected to become available after June 1st. Parent PC is replacing them with 50 45CWDC and 50 45CWAC's from HPLB, the first 20 of which should be delivered next week.

PC has received 20 of its new locomotives down at Undercliff yard in Cincinnati via NS and started placing them into service today. This is ten 45CWDC's and ten 45CWAC's, the DC's are numbered 5300-5349 and the AC's are numbered 5200-5249. Ten more units are on their way to Cincinnati today via NS and they should be here and activated by the end of the week.
