The first Wind Turbines were delivered today, and the second train should leave Colorado Tomorrow. The Empties should go west Friday. Idea will be to get WSAGCHI to Chicago and switch the power to WCHISAG, but if we take too long CSX might not be too happy.

Huge mess on the Grand Rapids Subdivision. Dozens of trees down between Wells and Gross. Crews working from both ends since 3am to clear them all. One is coming from Gross eastward, one from Wells westward. Both are still around 2 miles short of Grand Junction, then it's 8,000ft of tree after tree after tree at the siding. National Weather Service is out looking at Grand Junction, sounds like it was straight line winds. Blew over 60% of the trees for about 2 miles wide, 3 miles long.

Traffic is snarled this morning, the Pere Marquettes are being re-routed via the AMTK Michigan Line and the PC GR&I north of K-zoo, but should be back to normal this evening. Otherwise, all the trains are holed up east and west of the blockage.

Crews have parked the trains and told to go home, all fresh crews ordered for 13:00 to grab all the eastbounds, many of which are still on the main, and haul them east. Since most will make GR in time, those crews will be taxied back out to bring a westbound as far as they can. All westbounds are in sidings, with one at Wells, Saugatuck, and Hudsonville each, then two in Holland, and 2 more delayed in Grand Rapids. There are 9 eastbounds that will have to be cleared first, and no westbounds will move until the final eastbound has cleared their location.

Otherwise, traffic moving well across the rest of the system, but Wyoming Yard is getting backed up with outbounds to Chicago and a lack of inbounds means many trains will be shorter today. 3rd Shift order there at all 3 ends thru Saturday night at least.

Heads Up, CIL #821 just dumped 13 coal hoppers on the ground at CP Hoosier. See more here: viewtopic.php?f=24&t=25940&start=340

Crews are already on the scene, and are working feverishly to try and get the cleanup started. Hopefully, the wreckage will be all cleared off your diamonds (the main priority right now) by late tonight...

Our wreck train was dispatched from Wyoming Yard with an Extra board crew, and is already down to Benton Harbor fighting to get the bridge closed (tons of boats in the channel, US CG on the way... Should be on scene soon. Includes a big wreck crane. Also have plenty of air to power tools. Crew of 20 as well pulled from the Steamfest. Not really happy about the long night, but hey, it is 4x overtime pay. Sleeping until they arrive.

Let us know when each of the 3 mains are cleared. We need to run our Pere Marquettes tomorrow, but until then, just two manifests that will be held up on either side of the derailment site on Mains 1 and 2.

WCHIBAL-10: CWR trail from USS in Gary. Has 160 sticks of 1/4 mile rail to be laid in the following spots: Annoyance to New Buffalo, New Buffalo to Sawyer, Grand Junction to Wells, Saugatuck to Holland, Holland to Hudsonville, Fuller to Sparta, Grant to Newaygo. All areas should be dropped by this train and it's recrews thru Friday, then MOW folks should be out installing the new rail over the next few weeks. Old rail will be pulled by a different train and brought to USS for scrapping.

Our GP60-3SLGs have been working nicely around the Marquette Rail network. Crews have sent back rave reviews of them, particularly pointing out their ability to put lots of power to the rails without slipping, and with a lot of control. One engineer said "I can go at whatever speed I like. I can haul 50+ cars at 2 mph or at 15. And I can choose exactly what speed using the MUGC interface. If I want 4mph, I've got four. If I want 13, I've got it. Our crews who have used them on the long locals love the speed control as well, citing the full dynamic braking on all three units means air is used sparingly.

Crews are also loving the MUGC interface. To date, MQT has logged about a 17% fuel savings...no drop in the bucket, under the technology. MUGC allows locomotive consists to operate like one big Genset. On trains running over the hilly Plymouth Sub, trains might need 9000 horses for the big hills as Fox, Thornapple, AnnPere or Salem, but next to nothing in other places. With out moving a finger, the MUGC senses all of this, and can adjust each unit's power up and down independently of the others, even to idle, and can even shut down a unit if the engineer wants to. This means that while I-GRRTOL and the return trains usually run with twin SD70s and a SD40, that SD40 is under power around 5% of the time, and the second SD70 about 40%. This train tends to be next to an outlier, but that certainly does not mean MUGC's value is being overstated. Simply put: MUGC installation pays for itself quite quickly. In 4 months of full-fleet service, MQT has recouped about 15% of the investment of installation on a fleet of almost 200 units. 2 years to pay for it, then 15 years+ to benefit, minus any software upgrades, hardware shouldn't need replacement.

We have now made changes to the Plymouth Subdivision train list based on our audit. The following changes have been made:

M-PLYTOL Daily Anulled, Cars grabbed by MSAGTOL
M-TOLPLY Daily Anulled, Cars dropped by MTOLSAG
L-ALPPAX (TURN) Weekdays Anulled, Now done by YALP1

Also, the Taconite Trains from Alpena have ceased, as the mill closed. The processor in Alpena is temporarily shutting down until they find new customers. They are hopeful, but there may no longer be two daily trains in each direction. With that, the Huron Sub just got a lot quieter.

4-way meet in Grandville this evening.

Y-GRR-WE held the run-around switching Standale Lumber
P-CHIGRR flew by on #2 track
M-GRRCHI2 held east of the plant on #1 for Amtrak to clear
M-MUSGRR held #1 west of the plant. Extra trains are low priority...

Amtrak went by, then MGRRCHI went one to two westbound, then MUSGRR went east one to one, into the reefer and into the I yard, shortly thereafter, with I-GRRCHI going by west on two, Y-GRR-WE went east on One back to the yard...

Conrad Yelvingston has announced that it will no longer be shipping in stone from Ohio and Illinois to it's plants in Lansing and Grand Rapids, instead, it will be getting stone from Alpena, and possibly Rodgers City. They already get Rodgers City Stone delivered to their Saginaw Yard. The company pointed to cheaper transportations costs using one railroad instead of three, plus getting tax credits for in-state stuff. Thanks to a robust construction rebound, the Grand Rapids and Lansing facilities are receiving 20% more stone this year over last.

I put in quite a bit of time today working on my trains list. Quite a few things I've neglected to add-in over time. For one, finally added the GR&P's trains to the list. There are a whopping 50 trains scheduled for tomorrow on the joint line between CP Annoyance and Porter Junction, on top of 10 trains from Amtrak, and the usual 80 off of NS, and a dozen off the Porter Branch. Well there are 3 mains and a Passenger main, but that is still a lot of trains! Hence rumblings NS will be installing a tower just for it this fall...

The Trains list keeps on evolving. Here is the latest version, the one that goes into effect tomorrow. I have added what the usual power is to my list, but the coding here does not like it very much, so I can't show it. Latest Business news:

- The Ethanol Plant located in Pinconning is no longer producing enough to warrant unit trains. In an agreement met by MQT and the company, the plant will now be switched Tuesdays, Thursdays & Saturdays by the southbound L-ALPSAG. They have options to get an extra switch from L-SAGGRY, L-GRYSAG or L-SAGALP as well. The cars will simply be added to M-TOLSAG and M-SAGTOL, and K-PINTOL and K-TOLPIN are from here on out annulled.
