New York & Chicago Western(NYCW)

Unread post by DT&I »

Is a regional class 2 railroad that operates mainly between New York, New York and Chicago, Illinois. The company also has lines from New York to Buffalo, Toledo to Detroit, Columbus to Toledo, and from Columbus down into the West Virginian Appalachians. Most traffic on the railroad is on the North Platte to Milwaukee line and the Chicago to New York line. Both of these lines see about 55 trains a day. Most of the signals on the eastern lines are former Pennsylvania Railroad and most of the western routes have searchlights although hooded Safetrans have begun to show up throughout the routes. Most units on the roster are SD40-2's, NYCW also has GP38-2's, SW1500's, GP40-2's, SD38-2's, SD50-2's, SD45's, C36-7's, U30B's, U30C's(ex-MILW), B40-8C's, and a couple of SD60 standard cabs(former SOO). All of this power is needed to pull heavily loaded coal trains out of West Virginia. Also 5 HLCX SD40-2's are usually seen on the Chicago Line.

The Middleston District is a shortline between Middleton, WV and St. Joseph, WV. It is totally dark territory and sees one train a week, K22. K22 usually has a SW1500 running a couple of centerbeams up to a small mill. K22 runs empties and loads every other week. The mill is the only customer on the line and more will hopefully be added. The track condition is poor and speed on the line is 5 MPH so switching takes about an hour.

The Penn District is the mainline from Toledo to Columbus. It is ex-Pennsy from Stanley Yard to Oakway Yard. The line still has all the original Pennsy signals in place and a 9 passing sidings are located on the line. It sees about 15 trains a day and track speed is now up to 45 MPH. The line crosses the CSX and NS a Fostoria and serves a couple industries there. All trains usually don't meet on the line and if they do it's rare.

The Johnson District(Bullfrog Line on the radio) is the route between Columbus(Oakway) to Charleston, WV. It has several branchlines to coal mining areas, the Brewster Branch, Iron Branch, Grafton Branch, Derringer Branch, Fulton Branch, Keller Branch, Quincy Branch, and the Carlston Branch. Most coal trains are powered by foreign power or B40-8C's. It's rare to see Geeps on the coal branches as they are used more on frieghts and intermodals.
