Rochester & Argos RR (RAGR)

Unread post by Y@ »

The Rochester & Argos RR was formed in 1994 in order to keep service on branch lines that Norfolk Southern was trying to rid themselves of. In October 1994, the RAGR began operating the former Michigan City Branch between Michigan City and Rochester. Just a few months later in March of 1995, they also took over operation of the former Nickel Plate between La Crosse and Rochester, along with the branchlines to Beardstown and Wagoner after a few new customers opened up.

The north end of the system (Argos-Michigan City) is handled by a pair of turn jobs. The L-MCW handles all work between Michigan City and Plymouth, while the L-PME handles everything between Argos and Plymouth. Both locals run six days a week and are often referred to as the "700 and 701 jobs." South of Argos, L-AGS runs five days a week (and occasionally on Saturday) and handles cars for the Western Branch as well as local industries around Argos and Rochester. Work on the Western Branch is handled by L-ROE five days a week. The main customer is L&L Manufacturing in La Crosse, while the Poet ethanol plant in Beardstown also generates good business.

The RAGR roster is made up of mostly ex-NS engines.

RAGR GP38AC 2845 (Wears NS paint)
RAGR GP38 2886 (Wears NS paint)
RAGR GP35 3000 (Wears IHRC red/white)
RAGR B23-7 4020 (Wears NS paint)
RAGR B23-7 4021 (Wears Southern paint)
RAGR B23-7 4022 (Wears Southern paint)
RAGR GP30M 4510 (Wears BN green)
RAGR GP39E 4517 (Wears BN green)
RAGR C30-7 8105 (Wears Conrail paint)
RAGR C30-7 8131 (Wears Conrail paint)

Power doesn't move around the system very often, but occasionally engines will be moved to different bases. Typically, the two C30-7's are on the L-MCW, the 2845 and 3000 are on the L-PME, the 4021 and 4022 are on the L-AGS, and the 2886 and 4020 are on the L-ROE. The two ex-BN geeps can be found in Rochester most of the time, as they are extra units and are used only when needed. Both are relegated to 'trail-unit only' status.

Cars are interchanged with NS in Argos, CN in Stillwell, and CSX in Michigan City.
