OHNR Indianapolis Divison

Unread post by Y@ »

The Indianapolis Divison of my Class I carrier, the Ohio Northern, is made up of the Fort Wayne District, the Bucyrus District, the Lima District, the Toledo District, the Columbus District, and the Chicago District.

The Fort Wayne District is the former Pennsy line from Hobart to Lima, via Valparaiso, Hamlet, Plymouth, Warsaw, Columbia City, Fort Wayne, and Delphos. The line was purchased from Conrail in 1990 and sees around 30 trains per day. In 1996, the line went through a major renovation as double track was extended east from Hobart to Valparaiso, and sidings added in Plymouth and Larwill. Searchlight signals were installed at all control points except the diamond in Warsaw, where the only set of Pennsy Position Lights remain.

East of Lima, the former Pennsy is the Bucyrus District. The line only sees around 10 trains per day, and most of them use the connection in Dunkirk to run to/from Columbus. East of Dunkirk, the line sees only one train; L44, the Lima-Crestline local. The Dunkirk connection was installed in 1997 when the Toledo Branch was purchased from Conrail, becoming the OHNR Toledo District.

The Lima District is the former Nickel Plate (later Norfolk Southern) between Arcadia and Lima. The line sees 15-20 trains per day west of Findlay, and only two scheduled trains between Arcadia and Findlay. Those two trains originate and terminate at Norfolk Southern's Blair Yard in Fostoria. All other trains use the connection to the Toledo District in Findlay to get to/from Toledo.

The Toledo District is the former New York Central (later Conrail) between Toledo and Columbus. The line sees around 20 trains per day north of Findlay, 6 between Findlay and Dunkirk, and 25-30 south of Dunkirk. In Toledo, trains use the Broadway Connection to get in and out of the Broadway Street Yard. Trains use the original OHNR Scioto Yard on the west side of Columbus.

The Columbus District is the original OHNR Chicago mainline between Indianapolis and Columbus via Richmond, Vandalia and Springfield. The line is mostly double track with two 6 mile stretches of single track on each side of Vandalia. The line sees around 30 to 40 trains per day. The Greensburg District to Louisville splits off in Richmond, but that line is part of the Memphis Divison.

The Chicago District is the west end of the original OHNR Chicago mainline between Chicago and Indianapolis via Crown Point, Monon, Delphi and Frankfort. The line is single track with frequent passing sidings. Around 30-40 trains use the line every day.
