Chicago & Central Indiana RR
Chicago & Central Indiana RR
The Chicago & Central Indiana RR (CCIR) is a regional carrier that was formed in 1990 running on former CSX (B&O) trackage between Chicago and Louisville. In 1993, the CCIR expanded by acquiring another former B&O line, the Georgetown and Richmond Subdivisions that made up the Champaign-Dayton route, running via Indianapolis. Since then, the system map hasn't changed much from what it was in 1993. The CCIR also controls various branch lines and industrial tracks across the system. (Note: many smaller towns across the system are fictional.)
Traffic is composed mainly of local on-line traffic, but there is a decent amount of overhead traffic as well. The CCIR serves two large power plants that receive regular unit coal trains; one in Georgetown, IL and one in Hanover, IN. The largest customer on the line is Toro Lawn Equipment. Toro has their largest assembly plant in Urbana, IL, as well as a large parts plant in Dayton, OH. Nearly a hundred boxcars of parts travel from Dayton west to Urbana a week.
In 1995, the CCIR purchased 200 used boxcars from Norfolk Southern. To show appreciation for Toro's business, 30 of them got a special scheme with Toro logos. Most of these 200 cars are in dedicated plant-to-plant service for Toro.
Since the start up in 1990, GP40-2's have been the primary workhorse of the CCIR. At the start, the CCIR owned 20 GP40-2's. Ten more were purchased from Helm Leasing in 1995. Due to the increase in coal and grain trains, the CCIR leased 10 SD40-2s from the bankrupt Ohio Northern in 2000, and purchased them a year later. Since then, five more SD40-2's have been added. Other secondhand EMD's fill out the roster for a total of 50 engines. When power is short, borrowed units from NS, CSXT, and even INRD can be found on property.

Re: Chicago & Central Indiana RR
Do you still use the CSX-era DTC blocks for dark territory/signal supensions or are you using a different system?Y@ wrote:The Chicago & Central Indiana RR (CCIR) is a regional carrier that was formed in 1990 running on former CSX (B&O) trackage between Chicago and Louisville. Re: Chicago & Central Indiana RR
Most of the dark territory still uses the DTC blocks, but some has been removed. For example, the Liberty Branch is still composed of the Beelor, Potter, and Liberty blocks. The Scottsburg Branch, however, no longer uses the system.dti407 wrote:Do you still use the CSX-era DTC blocks for dark territory/signal supensions or are you using a different system?Y@ wrote:The Chicago & Central Indiana RR (CCIR) is a regional carrier that was formed in 1990 running on former CSX (B&O) trackage between Chicago and Louisville. Re: Chicago & Central Indiana RR
While I'm at it, here's the complete list of the former B&O DTC blocking system still in use today.
The Richmond Subdivision between E. Richmond and E. Morristown has the following blocks, from east to west.
Center Block, Dublin Block, Lewis Block, Knight Block, Carthage Block, Morris Block.
The Georgetown Subdivision between E. Waveland and E. Georgetown has the following blocks, from east to west.
Wave Block, Byron Block, Forest Block, Sylvania Block, Lodi Block, Cayuga Block, Newman Block, Georgetown Block.
The Liberty Branch uses the following blocks.
Beelor Block, Potter Block, and Liberty Block.
All other territory no longer uses this system.

100 box cars a week is good business! How far is it between Toro plants and what trains do the box cars travel on?
PatC created a monster, 'cause nobody wants to see Don Simon no more they want AARR I'm chopped liver, well if you want AARR this is what I'll give ya, bad humor mixed with irrelevant info that'll make you roll your eyes quicker than a ~Z~ banhammer...
Re: Chicago & Central Indiana RR
Loaded cars travel the 230+ miles from Dayton to Urbana via a few different moves.
First, loaded cars are picked up in Dayton by local job Y309. The cars are taken to the Michigan Street Yard, where they depart later in the day on J715. Once in Indianapolis, the cars are seperated from the rest of the train and are added to the (usually) ready to depart J717. The cars then make the trip to Champaign, where they are switched out, and local job Y334 delivers them to the assembly plant. The empties return to Dayton via the same process, only backwards.
Y309 goes on duty around 02:00 and is specifically called to work the Toro plant. Another local later in the day handles the other local duties. They have the loads back in the yard by around 07:00, and the westbound J715 departs around 08:30-09:00, arriving in Indianapolis around 13:00-14:00 on most days. The cars are immediatley added to J717, which departs around 15:30, arriving in Champaign around 19:00. Y334 is another job that only has one duty, the Toro work. They are called around 20:30 and have their work order complete by around 02:00 most days.

Makes you wonder why real railroads are not able to set up more service lanes like thisY@ wrote:Loaded cars travel the 230+ miles from Dayton to Urbana via a few different moves.

Re: Chicago & Central Indiana RR
This service has been around since the 1970's now. The B&O, Chessie System, and CSX all provided similar service to the two plants before the CCIR got the line. Traffic levels have gone up and down over the years, but the outlook is good right now as carload amounts continue to grow quarter by quarter. There are plans for additions to both plants, and if that happens the CCIR may start running unit trains of loaded parts cars from Dayton to Urbana 2-3 times a week.

Where does this line cross the MoPac? Should be Tuscola. I don't think B&O was ever in Champaign?

OH, ok...I was thinking it was actually based on the old B&O from Decatur east through Tuscola, Murdock, Hillsdale, etc.
