BGS Northern Divison

Unread post by Y@ »

The BGS Northern Division consists of a few small subdivisions, the only exceptions being the Mountain Subdivision which runs from Binghamton, NY to Albany, NY, and the Johnstown Subdivision which runs from Albany to Alton, ME. (Note: the towns and locations along the way are fictional.) I will profile the Johnstown Sub later.

The Mountain Sub is of Boston & Maine heritage, and went to Guilford and New England Rail before BGS took over operations in 1995. The line sees between 20-30 trains on a normal day, and with the completion of the Albany Intermodal Terminal nearing completion, a few new trains should be running by mid-summer. The entire line is CTC with US&S searchlight signals. Cantilevers and signal bridges dominate the line, but several sets of single masts also remain.

Working from the west end to the east end, here's the list of signal locations according to mileposts. All signals are searchlights unless otherwise noted.

CP Carter - MP 0: Three track signal bridge for both directions. Third main is the NER interchange.

CP Sunbury - MP 1: Three track signal bridge for both directions. Third main is the NER interchange.

Holdout - MP 4: Mast signals in all directions. Double track ends here.

KC Tower - MP 5 - NER diamond: Mast signals in all directions.

Crockton - MP 8: Searchlights replaced in 2008 by modern vader-hoods after derailment.

CP 11 - W. Anderson: Mast signal for eastbounds, two track cantilever for westbounds. Start of Anderson siding for eastbounds.

CP 13 - E. Anderson: Single bracket mast for eastbounds, mast signal for westbounds. End of Anderson siding for eastbounds.

Newville Center - MP 17: Mast signals in both directions.

CP 19 - Norwalk - NYS Diamond: Mast signals in all directions.

CP 22 - W. Corbin: Mast signal for eastbounds, single bracket mast for westbounds. Start of Corbin Siding for eastbounds.

CP 25 - E. Corbin: Searchlights replaced with modern vader-hoods in 2010 after derailment.

Albright - MP 27: Cantilever signal for both directions.

Almans - MP 31: Mast signals for both directions.

Bevier - MP 35: Single mast signal for both directions.

Hampton - MP 40: Seperate cantilevers for both directions.

CP 42 - Worthington: Mast signal for eastbounds, single bracket mast for westbounds. Start of double track for eastbounds.

Springs - MP 44: Modern vader-hoods installed in 2007.

CP 46 - Midway: Mast signals for both directions.

Bettsville - MP 109: Cantilever signal for both directions. Bettsville siding formerly started for eastbounds here, the siding was removed in the late 90's.

Grelton - MP 111: Signal bridge for both directions. Bettsville siding formerly ended here for eastbounds. The ROW for track two remains, but the signal heads that controlled track two have been removed, as is the case at MP 109.

CP 113 - NS Connection/NS Diamond: Mast signals in all directions.

CP 114 - W. Albany: Mast signal for eastbounds, two track cantilever for westbounds. Start of double track. CP 114 also marks the end of the Mountain Subdivison, as the Albany Subdivision begins here.

A list of train symbols will come along soon.

Yeah, it's sort of based off the old D&H between Binghamton and Mowhawk. Got the idea after I watched a DVD focused on that line in the early 90's. A ton of cool scenery and plenty of searchlights too.

Here's the info about the Johnstown Subdivision. The line is of B&M heritage between Albany and CP 185 in Johnstown, and from CP 185 to Alton is formerly the Alton & Northern (A&N) railroad. Most searchlights remain from Albany to CP 185, and everything east of CP 185 are US&S type R-2 signals. The junction at CP 185 was reconfigured in 1996 to give the Johnstown Subdivision the right-of-way. A large upgrade program is being planned for this summer. Not sure what that means for the older signals but there will be changes.

Working from the west end to the east end, here's the list of signal locations according to mileposts.

CP 114 - W. Albany: Mast signal for eastbounds, two track cantilever for westbounds. Start of double track.

CP 115 - W. Yard Lead: Three track signal bridge for both directions.

CP 118 - Yard Center: Three track signal bridge for the main and sidings, mast signals for the yard connection track. The south siding ends here for eastbounds.

CP 119 - E. Yard Lead: Two track signal bridge for both directions.

CP 121 - Green Creek: Two track cantilever for eastbounds, mast signal for westbounds. The north siding ends here for eastbounds.

Glendale - MP 123: Mast signals for both directions.

Bremen Hill - MP 127: Single mast signal for both directions. A modern vader-hood replaced the searchlight in 2008.

Franklin - MP 129: Mast signals for both directions.

CP 132 - Millersburg: Mast signals for both directions. Start of double track for eastbounds.

CP 134 - Elron: Modern vader-hoods installed in 2007 when the crossovers were put in.

CP 136 - Crows Run: Mast signals for both directions. End of double track for eastbounds.

Bloomington - MP 139: Single mast signal for both directions.

Sydney - MP 143: Mast signals for both directions.

Calumet - MP 146: Mast signals for both directions.

Haynes - MP 150: Single cantilever for both directions. Formerly the site of HN Tower and the diamond with the A&N Courtland Branch.

CP 154 - Belgrade: Mast signals for both directions. Start of double track for eastbounds.

CP 156 - Summit: Two track cantilever for eastbounds, two track signal bridge for westbounds. Former site of Summit Tower. This control point also marks the end of the steep climb east from Glendale, along with the climb from Holden for westbounds.

CP 158 - Wincraft: Mast signals for both directions. End of double track for eastbounds.

Blanchard - MP 161: Semaphore signals for both directions. This is the only remaining pair of semaphores left on the former B&M.

Browns Hollow - MP 164: Mast signals for both directions.

Waynesboro - MP 167: Single mast signal for both directions.

Newport - MP 171: Mast signals for both directions.

CP 173 - W. Woodbury: Mast signal for eastbounds, two track cantilever for westbounds. Woodbury siding starts here for eastbounds. This siding has a 10 mph speed restriction.

CP 175 - E. Woodbury: Mast signals for both directions. Woodbury siding ends here for eastbounds.

Bennett - MP 178: Single mast signal for both directions.

Holden - MP 182: Single cantilever signal for both directions.

CP 184 - Johnstown: Mast signal for eastbounds, two track signal bridge for westbounds. Double track starts here for eastbounds.

CP 185 - JTSR Diamond: Mast signals in all directions. BGS crosses and connects with the Johnstown Southern Railway here, and crossovers were also installed in 2007.

CP 186 - W. Johnstown Yard: Three track signal bridge for both directions. The third main starts here for eastbounds.

CP 188 - E. Johnstown Yard: Five track signal bridge for both directions. The second main ends here, leaving only Main One and Main Three along with the two Yard Mains.

CP 189 - Bellamy: Three track signal bridge for eastbounds, mast signal for westbounds. Main Three ends here for eastbounds.

Glenn Fort - MP 192: Mast signals for both directions.

Mansfield - MP 196: Mast signals for both directions.

CP 199 - Leefield: Mast signals for both directions. Leefield siding starts here for eastbounds.

CP 201 - Leroy: Two track cantilever signal for eastbounds, mast signal for westbounds. Leefield siding ends here for eastbounds.

Canton - MP 204: Single mast signal for both directions. A modern vader-hood replaced the US&S tri-lights in 2009.

Arizona - MP 206: Mast signals for both directions.

Springville - MP 209: Mast signals for both directions.

CP 211 - Alton: Mast signal for eastbounds, two track cantilever signal for westbounds. Alton siding starts here for eastbounds.

CP 213 - Alton Diamond: Two track cantilever signal for eastbounds, three track signal bridge for westbounds. The signal bridge is wide enough for three tracks, but only one track actually remains at CP 213 on the east side of the A&N diamond here. AT Tower also stands here.

CP 214 - W. Alton Yard: Four track signal bridge for both directions. The signal bridge is wide enough for four tracks, but only two tracks actually remain at CP 214. Double track starts here for eastbounds.

CP 215 - E. Alton Yard: Three track cantilever signal for eastbounds, mast signal for westbounds. The cantilever is wide enough for three tracks, but only two actually remain at CP 215. Double track ends here for eastbounds. This also marks the end of the Johnstown Subdivision for eastbounds.
