Ohio Northern RR - Chicago Division

Unread post by Y@ »

The OHNR is one of my older Class I's, and I've decided to post info on a division by division basis, starting with the Chicago Divison. This division consists of the following, also shown on this map: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie ... 064209&z=7

St. Louis Line: Made up of the St. Louis Subdivision running between East St. Louis and Springfield, IL, the Clinton Subdivision running between Springfield and Richton Park, IL, and the Terminal Subdivision running from Richton Park into the BRC Clearing Yard.

Decatur Line: Made up of the Decatur Subdivision running between Clinton and Marshall, IL, the Indiana Subdivision running from Marshall to Bedford, IN, and the Salem Subdivison running between Bedford and Louisville, KY.

Peoria Line: Made up of the Normal Subdivision between Peoria and Danville, IL, and the Avon Subdivision between Danville and Avon, IN.

Logansport Line: Made up of the Terminal Subdivision from BRC Clearing to Richton Park, the Logansport Subdivision from Richton Park to Logansport, and the Muncie Subdivision from Logansport to Muncie.

The lines all see decent amounts of traffic, but the main focus is the St. Louis line. For the most part, the line retains the classic Ohio Northern searchlight signals and cantilevers, as well as center sidings at Essex, Fairbury, and Modesto in Illinois. The other routes still retain some of the older signals, but not as many as the St. Louis line. A signal project this fall may be the end of that. I will have a track chart of the St. Louis, Clinton and Terminal Subdivisons up soon, complete with signal locations and other info.

Here's a little more detail about the older OHNR signals. They were installed in the early 1960's and are of the same design as the old C&O US&S R-2 color signals: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.p ... 79&nseq=16

There are very few structural design differences between the C&O signals and the OHNR signals. The main difference is the light configuration. C&O signals were set-up to be Red over Yellow over Green. The OHNR signals are Green over Yellow over Red.
