Ohio Belt RR (OBRR)

Unread post by Y@ »

This is my newest addition to my collection, the OBRR, which operates over the former CSX/CR/NYC Toledo Branch from Toledo to Columbus (with trackage rights to Detroit on CSX), and the former NS line from Lima to Arcadia (with trackage rights into Fostoria).

Operations in Toledo are based out of the Oregon Road Yard. From there, the line runs south through towns like Lime City, Bowling Green, North Baltimore/Galatea, Findlay, Dunkirk, Kenton, Ridgeway, Marysville, and into Upper Arlington where the Dublin Road Yard is located. Road trains over this track are trains 300 (southbound) and 303 (northbound), along with occasional extras and CP run-thru's (CP trains get off OBRR in Ridgeway and take CSX to St. Louis).

Operations on the Bluffton Sub (Lima-Findlay-Arcadia) are based in IORY's Ford Park Yard in Lima. There, interchange is done with CSX, I&O and W&LE. Findlay is where the Bluffton Sub crosses the Toledo Branch. From there the route runs northeast to Arcadia where trackage rights on NS take over.

Looks like your local will have a lot of work to do. You may even need a couple shifts to complete all your switching.

I'm always thinking of these redundant lines and shortlines and turning them into a "paper regional". Take this line, the IORY, CFE and combine them all, that would make for a kickarse little railroad, touching Chicago, Ft. Wayne, Lima, Toledo, Cincinnati, Columbus, Detroit and everywhere inbetween. I think I've done that before, but it's just too mammouth of an undertaking and I have no real knowledge of the lines so it would be a pretty sketchy railroad. That's why I stick to the line(s) I know a little better. You have a nice start here!

I'm working on one involving AA, GLC, and I&O (DT&I line). I'm pretty far along on local business but still thinking through overhead traffic between CMGN and CF&E (Durand to Lima). I'll create a separate post when ready. In my spin GLC acquired AA & TSBY at same time (2006?) while AA & ADBF acquired DT&I (from GTW in March ,1997). Anyway, sorry to hi-jack Y@'s thread but I hope you check out my regional when it's posted.

The lease on FURX SD40-2's 3001, 3004, 3012, 3019, and 3025 is expiring this Sunday, and we've made no attempt to renew or extend the lease. Looks like we'll be getting a few new six-axles for the beginning of next week. Updates to come.

Looks like we're getting a few from National Railway Equipment. NREX SD40-2's 7360, and 7364 are on their way, along with SD40-2B 5481. That unit is a former NS unit that was sold to CPRail, and then to NRE. Still has the high-hood although she's relegated to trail-unit-only status. Kind of interesting... there hasn't been any mention of needing a B-unit around here.

More updates on the new power will come as I get them. After talking to a friend who works out of Findlay on the OBRR, he said he's heard we need 6 more fully operational six-axles. We have the two on their way, plus a B-unit. He's almost sure the B-unit will count as an "extra" engine, so to speak.

NREX 5481, 7360 and 7364 should be delivered in Toledo by tonight. Sounds like the other 4 units will come from HLCX. Rumors buzzing about SD60's instead of SD40-2's this time.

Edit: It has been confirmed that HLCX is sending two SD60's, 5971 and 5998. This means that there are still at least four units that need to be leased, and I'm not sure where they'll be coming from. More updates to come.

Edit #2: Just got the text confirming that LTEX is sending 6 units our way. Here are shots of the units coming.

LTEX SD40-2 3415: http://www.locophotos.com/PhotoDetails. ... toID=50741
LTEX SD40 7310: http://www.locophotos.com/PhotoDetails. ... toID=33305
LTEX SD40T-2 8572: http://www.locophotos.com/PhotoDetails. ... toID=40747
LTEX SD40T-2 8593: http://www.locophotos.com/PhotoDetails. ... toID=49356
LTEX SD40T-2 8858: http://www.locophotos.com/PhotoDetails. ... toID=65866
LTEX SD40-2 9912: http://www.locophotos.com/PhotoDetails. ... toID=69297

Certainly an interesting group of power there.

Thanks Don. I will get you pictures, but they will be yellow engines and not in my paint scheme. :P I was actually thinking last night of posting pictures of the types of freight cars we get.

Sorry for hijacking your thread, Y@. I'm done. You have a very eclectic mix of power there, indeed. Are these leases or do you plan to purchase?

Thanks Tops. For now they are leases. I'm not sure if we'll buy any of them. They are all on a 2 month testing lease, and if we like them we'll extend the lease.

Didn't take the yard crew in Toledo long to get a couple of the LTEX units into action. Units 8593 and 8572 are called to go south to the gravel pit in Lime City to pick up a rock train and take it south to Columbus at 13:20 today. I'll probably go catch that movement.

I've been wondering why we added more six-axle power to the roster, and I got my answer today. Norfolk Southern has sold their track running from Arcadia, OH to Lima, OH to us. This deal includes trackage rights from Arcadia to Fostoria to interchange with both NS and CSX. This move has been made so that traffic can be forwarded more directly from the CF&E to points north and east. The takeover begins on Monday and will add 2 new road trains and a few new local jobs. These will be posted in the original post.

SGLX is sending a pair of recently acquired SD40-2's that were bought from BNSF at an auction. SGLX 6307 and 6311.

Here they are in previous lives on BNSF.

SGLX SD40-2 6307: http://www.locophotos.com/PhotoDetails. ... oID=106926
SGLX SD40-2R 6311: http://www.locophotos.com/PhotoDetails. ... oID=103889

Note that the 6311 was upgraded to SD40-2 specs by SGLX after being purchased last month. Our current total for road units is 13.

EDIT: Looks like we've hit up GCFX for what will most likely be the final lease transaction for awhile. The following units will be here by Sunday night.

GCFX SD40-2 3086: http://www.locophotos.com/PhotoDetails. ... toID=84542
GCFX SD40-2 3089: http://www.locophotos.com/PhotoDetails. ... toID=81616
