The Musketawa RR recently acquired and now operates the former MMRR/CSX/C&O trackage from Fremont, MI south to West Olive, where trackage rights on CSX begin.

To serve our customers with dedicated fleets of railcars we have secured large fleets of cars with Midwest Railcar, HELM Leasing and AOK. You will notice the redundancy of reporting marks throughout the pictures linked here. We also have a smaller account with GE Rail for a few tanks (NATX) and pressurized hoppers (NAHX)

We have settled on power. We will be purchasing 6 GP40-2's from FEC (#'s 410-415). We will also be leasing 2 SD40-2's from FURX (#'s 3012 & 3015) for trials. Units will retain their road numbers and will have MSKR reporting marks.

Train designations are as follows:

L101 1st shift local #1 - OD 0700 (Nugent, Webb, Cole's, Sappi, Mart Dock)
L102 1st shift local #2 - OD 1000 (Fremont Co-op, Bayer, Brinks, Bay, Weber, Shoreline Recycling, Helpers)
R301 3rd shift road train - OD 1800 (GR Turn, yard work)

L101 and L102 are both scheduled for 8 hours of work, although they are able to work 12. L102 will usually get done around 1800, but if the R301 needs a push up the Henry Street Hill, they will do that before tying up. L101 uses 1 GP40-2, L102 uses 2 GP40-2's. R301 uses 2/3 GP40-2's or the SD40-2's.

We have also purchased 3 cabooses. L101 can usually be seen with 2 of these cabs as they make multiple shoving moves while switching Nugent and Webb where more than one cab is needed. It is not unusual to see this train with a cab on both ends and the engine in the middle. R301 also needs a cab for their trip as they have the swing bridge in Ferrysburg and the power plant switch in West Olive. Cabs are ex-SOO 92, 119 & 133. The cabs currently have RAMX reporting marks, coming from Rail Merchants International.

Nice Bob. Don't forget the power plant near North Yard as a possible new customer. They would get 120 or so car unt trains couple times a week (don't have my notes in front of me but I think that's what it could be). And Bay could get newsprint, 10-11 cars per week. And in my little world Gerbers receives inbound raw materials such as oil and rice (about 6 cars a week).

Train 301-08 (07/08/10)

The FURX SD40-2's are now on-line and will be put to the test tonight. 301 OD 1800, departed Muskegon/North Yard at 1825 with 102-02 shoving on the rear with MSKR GP40-2's 413 & 410. 102 cut away south of Laketon at 1850 and returned to North Yard and tied up at 1910. 9 hour day for them. The SD40-2's sounded wonderful storming up the Henry Street Hill with horn blasting almost constantly. It was a show of lights, sound and smoke. Soon after the sound of the SD40-2's faded in the distance, the whine of the turbochargers on the helpers became faintly audible and grew louder and fiercer by the minute. As the GP40-2 helpers pass me, they quicky back off the throttle, and the conductor appears on the front platform of the engine, lifts the pin and signals the engineer to back off the throttle. The engines cut away on the fly and slow to a stop as 301's conductor appears on the rear platform of the caboose and gives a "salute" to the 102 crew; 102's engineer acknowledges with 2 short, quiet toots, as they start to head back down the hill to end their day.

Hey Bob, another possibility is reopening the line to Hart. Maybe a daily trip to Montague to switch a "green" chemical plant and a weekly trip to Hart to switch a foundry, couple canning plants, a fertilizer dealer, and a few misc. customers (lumber, plastic, etc.)

FURX 3009 has arrived on MSKR property. Several potential customers are in the works. Still working on the St. Mary's Cement deal, and now Blarney Castle Oil is looking to ship in diesel fuel among other products. Their complex is located on M-120 just west of the tracks. Also trying to work out a deal with Verplank's, shipping salt and aggregate (shipped in by freighter) from their docks on Muskegon Lake. All of these customers have the potential of adding a LOT of carload traffic to the line. Gerber seems semi-interested in our service; right now talks of inbound corn syrup and other ingredients would be present as would a small number of outbound loads (less than 5 per day - we'll take we get!) . We realize adding another road freight to CSX/GR may be needed if this new traffic is gained. St. Mary's Cement (on the Grand River/Ferrysburg) would ship 15-20 cars per day, as would Verplank's aggregate dock, while the salt dock would be 5-10. Blarney Castle will receive 10-15 cars per day, as well. That's another train-worth of carloads just from NEW customers! We are VERY excited!

We are very optimistic about our sea-to-steel shipments. We are working with St. Mary's Cement and Verplank's and helping them reach far-away customers, and ultimately bringing more revenue for them (as well as our railroad). Great opportunities exist in this department as now both customers will be able to ship large quantities of cement, aggregate and salt to new, out-of-state customers.

We are also in the works with the Mart Dock. Our plan is to use their facility as transloading area/team track as opposed to building our own facility (which was the original plan). Rail replacement/refurbishing will be required as some of the rails have not been used in years, however, they are still in place. This will help us reach those customers who are not located near our tracks.

We always have the B.C. Cobb plant in the back of our heads. The dreams of unit coal trains one day coming into Muskegon are impossible to avoid. This is hard work as in this area we are COMPETING against the freighters and we are not able to make them see the logic in spending the money to receive by rail what they already receive by boat. However, unit trains of aggregate, may be on the horizon

2 more FURX SD40-2's have arrived, completing our 6-axle roster.

I also have forgotten to mention that we have opened a car shop where we will do contract work (as well as in-house work). We plan to have the shop generate 5-10 repaired cars per day.

Train 301 has been renumbered Z695 as that is it's symbol on CSX. We also have Z693 and Z694 symbols assinged to us. Z694 will run as needed as a second section to Z695. This second section will be warranted when Z695 exceeds 8500 feet, as CSX appreciates when our trains fit in the siding at Hudsonville.

We have added a few new customers, located in Spring Lake and Grand Haven, MI. In Spring Lake, Active Manufacturing receives steel (sometimes coiled steel, sometimes sheetmetal on bulkhead flats); Herman Miller ships office furniture (desks, chairs, etc) and IzzyDesign ships chairs as well. In Grand Haven, we are now spotting cars at the Ottawa County Road Commission, seasonal commodities include, gravel, salt and sand.

Our locomotive roster and train schedules are being updated as well...

Roster was comprised of units obtained through auction from Union Pacific (no...not just because I work for them -- because they are the only RR I could find that had what I "needed"

)

6 GP39-2s that recently came off their lease; 1230, 1231, 1233, 1237, 1246, 1247
4 SD40-2s that were up for auction; 2973, 2976, 2977, 3047

All units will retain the same number for now. One extra of each was purchased.

The train symbols are based on IHB symbols, with a my own twist. The first spot is what type of train, R=road, W=wayfreight, S=switcher. The second spot is where the crew went on duty, N=North Yard, H=Henry Street Yard. The third spot denotes whether the job went OD in the AM (A) or PM (P). And lastly, they fourth spot is roughly what time the train went OD (not military time). Just FYI, IHB symbols, are much the same, except without the first letter (denoting type of train). It makes it easy to figure out all the details, I just have to tell you what they do:

RNA3 - Muskegon-Grand Rapids/CSX Turn (doubles and does airtest at North Yard) - Z695 on CSX
WNA6 - Muskegon-Fremont Turn (Fremont Co-op, Gerber, Bayer, Brinks, Blarney Castle)
SHA9 - Muskegon Switcher (Nugent, Webb, Verplanks, Mart, Shoreline, Weber, takes apart RNA3 when they return)
WNP3 - Muskegon-Grand Haven Turn (Bay/Shape, Active Mfg, Herman Miller, IzzyDesign, St. Mary's, OCRC)

The RNA3 uses 3 SD40-2s, the two locals use a pair of GP39-2s and the yard job uses one GP39-2. One 40-2 and one 39-2 are in the shop be serviced, inspected and repaired/maintained at any given time. They are rotated weekly.

I like all the detail. I take it you have trackage rights to Grand Rapids? Why does one train stop in Grand Haven and the other Grand Rapids.

Yes, we have trackage rights into Wyoming Yard, which CSX gladly agreed to as our trains are much too big for Waverly Yard and took up more space than they had there. WNP3 goes to Grand Haven to switch customers and is usually atleast an 8 hour job. RNA3 is the road freight to Grand Rapids. He goes on duty at 0300 and spends about 2 hours getting paper work, doubling their train and doing an airtest. It's a three hour trip to GR without delay and sometimes up to two hours can be spent in Wyoming Yard. That right there makes it a 10 hour job most days and he does not have to time do any short work so we had to instate a wayfreight on the south side...
