History of the LMOC

Founded in 1996 by combining several lines cast off from Class One's and regionals, the Lake Michigan and Ohio Central began as a single route from Michigan City, IN, to Van Wert, OH. As the months passed by, they grew. Bit by bit, rebuilding the old Cincinnati Northern from Cincy to Defiance, and upgrading the dierlect Wabash from Fort Wayne to Toledo. Then, in 1998, they doubled in size by purchasing the Ohio Belt RR, pushing them east to Cleveland, and south to Huntington.

As the route miles grew, so did the roster. And, like every other railroad, they needed a place to maintain them, so the site was chosen in 1998. A large new locomotive and car shop was built around the existing round house and fuel racks in Van Wert. Less than two months after opening, 5 other railroads were also already using the LMOC shops for their own repairs. Today, it remains the center of constant activity.

In July 2006, the LMOC once again branched out for spending. They purchased 6 EMD SD70ACe's for use on hot trains between Fort Wayne and Toledo on the Wabash. Since then, they have fit in well, and there's a chance that more could be purchased soon.
