It was a good morning to catch the eastbound roadrailer exiting the "tunnell" west of Jewell. The location is where eastbounds leave a long stretch of track where the tree's around the main form a tunnell of sorts. The cloudy and misty conditions brought out the green as two SD40-2's led the hot train east.

8:28 a.m. EB TCZ200
LMOC SD40-2 6400, LMOC SD40-2 6403. 133 trailers.

After some waiting, patience paid off in the form of another eastbound with a former NYSW unit up front.

9:05 a.m. EB R680-16
LMOC SD70M 781, LMOC SD50 5004, LMOC GP40 6212. 93 cars.

After moving west to the Arps Dairy in Defiance later in the day, we find another eastbound waiting on the south side of the river bridge for a westbound to pass.

2:31 p.m. WB R611-16
LMOC SD40-2 6407, LMOC B39-8 8311. 63 cars.

The eastbound brought our day to an end.

2:46 p.m. EB Z100-16
LMOC SD70ACe 701, LMOC SD70ACe 702. 113 cars (long count).

The 10 miles between Wellston and Chevelle, Georgia are some of the most scenic on the entire SACR system, and the Texas Sub is also where many of the the GP units on the roster spend the majority of their time. It's not the busiest line, hosting only 6 through freights and 2 locals every day, but all of these trains run in daylight.

A mile north of Chevelle, 636 is back under way after getting a new crew and doing work in the Hector St. yard. Sporting a yet to be patched L&N emblem on it's nose, 8217 and a brother have the train working up a .9% grade.

8:45 a.m. NB 636
SACR GP40 8217, SACR GP40-2 7306. 59 cars.

Later in the morning, 636's southbound counterpart crosses the Boulder River 4 miles north of Chevelle with a nice quartet of Geeps.

10:34 a.m. SB 689
SACR GP38-2 2034, SACR GP40 7131, SACR GP11 3005, SACR GP35E 5826. 81 cars.

Right on time, the first train of the afternoon is southbound trailer jet 241 bound for Pensacola passing under County Road 133 halfway between Wellston and Chevelle.

2:04 p.m. SB 241
SACR GP40 8204, SACR SD40-2 5944, SACR GP40-2 7303. 126 cars (long count).

A northbound empty coal train with borrowed CSX power crosses the other river on the stretch of track, the mighty Mendenhall River.

3:44 p.m. Extra CSX 484 North
CSX CW44AC 484, CSX CW44AC 93. 120 cars.

Finally at the south end of Wellston, the only GP10 on the SACR roster leads the northbound local from Chevelle towards the tire plant in Bellevue, complete with a caboose on the end.

4:58 p.m. NB L10
SACR GP10 900. 14 cars, 1 caboose.

This morning we were awakened early by scanner chatter of 636 ready to depart Chevelle, so we drove a few miles north of Wellston to record them with three Geeps up front. We would later find out that this train hit a semi just a mile north of us at Highway 190, tying the line up for several hours. The lead unit, 8215, was damaged and is currently on it's way to the shops in Savannah where it will be fixed and most likely repainted from it's current CSX YN1 scheme.

8:52 a.m. NB 636
SACR GP40 8215, SACR GP40-2 7304, SACR GP38-2 2028. 80 cars.

Later in the afternoon, the only train southbound from Augusta that wasn't anulled passed through Wellston, and we recorded it at Farm Street.

3:34 p.m. SB 241
SACR GP40 8200, SACR GP40 7136, SACR GP40-2 7307, NALX GP40M-2 6656. 104 cars (long count).

Today's 689, 600, 603, and 240 will be combined with tommorows or run as extra trains, so we will be out to record as many movements around Wellston as we can before our group moves north toward the farmlands on Thursday.

Waking up early can be a good thing. A misty morning on the SACR at Main Street in Chevelle finds northbound Z00 with a short train headed toward Savannah. This was Tuesdays 600.

7:02 a.m. NB Z00
MDLX GP39-2 2200, SACR GP40 8212. 41 cars.

An hour later, southbound 689 leads two days worth of freight south from Augusta with the B&O unit up front, and one of only 2 SD38 variant units on the roster in the lashup as well.

8:10 a.m. SB 689
SACR GP40 8210, SACR GP40 8200, SACR SD38-3 5400, SACR GP38-2 2021. 156 cars.

Northbound 636 is next up about 45 minutes later, with a pair of SD40-2's up front, not very common to geep country.

8:59 a.m. NB 636
SACR SD40-2 5938, SACR SD40-2 7626. 80 cars.

Later in the afternoon, southbound 603 has taken the siding in Wellston for northbound 240.

2:33 p.m. NB 240
SACR GP40-2 7300. 61 cars (long count).

2:45 p.m. SB 603
SACR GP40 8201, SACR SD40-2 8263. 67 cars.

Final train of the day, southbound 241 running later than normal due to the heavy morning and afternoon traffic.

4:20 p.m. SB 241
MDLX GP50 5007, MDLX GP50 5010. 101 cars (long count).

Host to a major classification yard and Intermodal terminal, Jasper, AL is a major point on the GSRR map. NY Tower is the railfan gathering area, where the line to Birmingham and Tallahassee diverge from the line to Mobile. Around 50 trains per day pass through, not counting yard jobs and transfers to the NS and BNSF. In the early morning, it’s a safe bet to catch northbound 780 as it stops to work the yard.

7:02 a.m. NB 780
GSRR SD40-2 7603, GSRR SD70 1114. 64 cars.

A southbound stack train takes the switch to the Birmingham Sub next.

7:34 a.m. SB 103
GSRR ES44AC 7815, GSRR SD50 8310. 115 cars (long count).

As the local foamers begin to congregate, the southbound road freight bound for Hattiesburg and eventually Houston has it’s crew on board and leaves the yard behind a quartet of older EMD’s.

8:08 a.m. SB 277
GSRR GP40 6812, GSRR SD40-2 5734, GSRR SD40E 8261, GSRR GP40 8204. 103 cars.

After crossing Morants Creek and Huff Street, a northbound train of mixed freight, produce, and finished automobiles slowly makes its way onto the Nashville District.

8:36 a.m. NB 420
GSRR SD70 1103, GSRR SD70M-2 5219, BNSF C44-9W 4825. 141 cars.

Looking more like a road freight, the transfer to the BNSF leaves the yard. Once proud members of the NOGR road fleet, the GP40’s are now relegated to these jobs, although some still manage to find their way onto road trains.

9:15 a.m. SB TR-FSCO-916
GSRR GP40 6888, GSRR GP40 6822. 51 cars.

A break in the action is ended by hot train 100, heading north from Pensacola with trailers and racks on the end.

10:01 a.m. NB 100
GSRR SD70M-2 5204, GSRR SD60M 8612. 128 cars (long count).

Trains 100 and 101 are the hottest that pass through town, and can usually be seen within minutes of each other, as was the case on this day.

10:24 a.m. SB 101
GSRR ES44AC 7810, GSRR ES44AC 7820. 132 cars (long count).
The final train of the morning is a southbound rack train from Nashville. The tough times in the economy have cut this trains schedule back to “as needed.”

11:15 a.m. SB 507
GSRR SD60M 8622, NALX SD40-2 8434, CSX C40-8 7588, CSX SD60 8703. 95 cars.
