Update for August 17, 2019

INSPECTIONS: Several locomotive inspections are being conducted by the KCC&E at both the Atlanta and Chicago shops. This is to ensure that the locomotives are safe and up to code for operation. If any locomotives fail their inspections, they will either have the issues repaired or, if the problems are severe enough, outright retired. These inspections will be conducted over the course of the next six months. The inspections will exclude all locomotives that were built new or rebuilt within the past three years.

STORAGE UPDATE: Around 25 of the previously-stored SD70ACe-T4s are presently at Progress Rail in Muncie, Indiana, getting fixes done. The last of the current 25 at Progress Rail, the KCC&E 5607, 5627, 5666, and 5694, were sent down to Muncie via Norfolk Southern train 19K, and were dropped off at Progress Rail via a local train. There are presently 61 SD70ACe-T4s out of service, including the units at Progress Rail.

MISHAP REPORT: On August 11, KCC&E train Z-CHPI struck a semi-truck in Elkhart, Indiana, severely injuring the driver. The truck driver was airlifted to the hospital, where he is presently recovering. As for the crew, both survived with only minor injuries, while the lead engine, ES44AC 829, suffered from severe damage and will be sent to Chicago for repairs.

I haven't done an update in a long time. It's about time I did.

Update for October 6, 2019

SD50u RETIREMENTS: Many more SD50u units have been retired, but these are going to remain on the property to be used as parts sources to keep the other SD50us running. The 12 SD50us being retired for use as parts sources are 3412, 3419, 3423-3425, 3426, 3437, 3439, 3440, 3444, 3459, 3463, 3466, 3481, 3487, 3491, and 3498. All units were either in Atlanta or Chicago at press time.

LOCOMOTIVE REACTIVATIONS: Several previously-stored locomotives have been reactivated. The units reactivated include 37 SD40-2s and 8 SD60s. A recent surge in general merchandise traffic on the KCC&E has prompted the railway to put these units back in service.

SD70MAC REBUILD PROGRAM: 25 SD70MACs are now billed for Progress Rail for rebuild as SD70MACe type locomotives. These units are KCC&E 1-25. They will be sent to Mayfield, Kentucky, where Progress Rail will rebuild them.

Long time no update.

STORED POWER: Due to continuously declining traffic levels, the KCC&E has stored even more power. These engines include:
- Entire SD60 fleet.
- Entire C40-8 fleet, apart from 58 C40-8us
- Entire SD50d fleet

However, the majority of the SD40 types are in service, with many having previously been in storage. Thus is because these engines are more reliable than the SD50ds, SD60s, and Dash 8s.

TIER 4 ACe STATUS: Over half of the SD70ACe-T4 fleet has been returned to service following tweaks made by Progress Rail. Still, 38 units are stored awaiting their turn to go to Progress Rail in Muncie, Indiana.

SD70MACe PROGRAM: The SD70MACe program is set to begin this January. All of the core units, all SD70MACs, have been sent to Progress Rail in Tacoma, Washington, for conversion to SD70MACe units

Update for January 1, 2020

COMPUTER SYSTEM: The KCC&E's computer system did not suffer from a "Y2.02K" glitch like a group of employees from Detroit thought would happen when the clock struck midnight last night. The clocks made a smooth transition to 2020 with no issues.

STORAGE UPDATE: The KCC&E has put more engines in storage. A group of 20 SD70M-2s in the 5000 series have been put in storage in Atlanta. All are in stored serviceable status, except the 5037, which is in stored unserviceable status. The unit suffered from a broken crankshaft and is expected to be sent to Progress Rail for repairs within the coming months.

ES44AC 926 has been put in storage at Chicago and is apparently stored serviceable. It is unknown why this unit is in storage, considering that the rest of the GEVO fleet is in service at the moment, apart from a couple of ES44ACs at Atlanta for servicing.

Update for January 13, 2020:

STORED POWER: 5 more SD70M-2s have been placed in storage, though all have bad orders and are to get repairs done. 5000, 5003, 5031, 5054, and 5077 are the units that have been stored with a bad order.

CN FRAC SAND TRAINS AND DPUs: CN's run-through frac sand trains from Wisconsin are now running on the KCC&E with a 2×1 power configuration. Before, there were usually 3 units up front providing power. The use of DPUs on heavy unit trains is to become more common in the coming months, as the KCC&E has planned to use DPUs on all trains weighing more than 10,000 tons. DPU-equipped motive power on the KCC&E roster include the AC4400CWs, ES44DCs, ES44ACs, ET44ACs, SD70ACes, and SD70ACe-T4s.

Update for January 20, 2020:

DERAILMENT IN ELYRIA: KCC&E train QCIPH derailed in Elyria, Ohio, on January 17. No locomotives derailed, and, most importantly, nobody was hurt or killed. However, 7 cars derailed, including 3 cars carrying sulfuric acid. Cleanup was completed earlier this morning.

OCEAN NETWORK EXPRESS: The KCC&E has won a contract to haul Ocean Network Express containers out of the Port of Savannah in Georgia. The KCC&E previously had a contract to haul NYK containers out of the same port back in the early-to-mid 2000s, but lost it in 2006 to CSX. NYK has since become a part of ONE.

Update for January 31, 2020:

KCC&E FOURTH QUARTER RESULTS: This will be the first time I share quarterly results on this thread. Operating revenues are down 7% to $2.3 billion due to a decrease in traffic and volume. The trade war against China and tariffs imposed against many countries worldwide have contributed to the decrease in volume. Operating expenses are down just 1% to $1.9 billion. Operating ratio rose to 67.9% from 66.9% last year.

CP REPAYING HORSEPOWER HOURS: The Canadian Pacific will be repaying horsepower hours to the KCC&E. Several engines were already on the property doing so at press time. These are: CP 5037, 6221, 8714, 8748, 8810, 8826, 8837, 8888 (a foamer favorite), 9719, 9804, and 9837.

MINOR DERAILMENT IN OHIO: One articulated car on KCC&E train ZPHCH derailed on January 28, DTTX 767035. Containers involved include UPSU 601048, UPSU 602392, JBHU 257903, JBHU 317893, SNLU 200001, and UPSU 604009. No injuries, but some of the track was damaged. Repairs were done throughout the 48 hours following the derailment.

Update for February 29, 2020

STORAGE UPDATE: The entirety of the SD50d, SD60, and C40-8 (non-rebuilds) fleet remain in storage due to low traffic levels, alongside 30 SD70M-2s and two SD60Is. These will remain in storage until traffic levels rise back up, which, considering the recent events around the world, might be a long while. Marine intermodal container shipments on the KCC&E have decreased sharply.

SD70MACe PROGRAM: Three SD70MACe overhauls have emerged from Progress Rail: KCC&E 3, 7, and 19. These units will be sent to the KCC&E at the beginning of March sometime. At press time, another SD70MACe, 14, was having finishing touches done to it.

CP HPH REPAYMENT: The following Canadian Pacific engines were on the KCC&E repaying horsepower-hours: CP 5037, 6221, 8009, 8143, 8504, 8555, 8705, 8714, 8733, 8748, 8810, 8826, 8837, 8849, 9719, 9804, 9806 and 9837. 8888 was sent back to the CP following an engine failure en route to Philadelphia on the ICHPH-21 on February 21. CP ES44AC 8888 is a railfan favorite, nicknamed the "Crazy 8s" unit. CP's rival CN also has a locomotive numbered 8888 on its roster, classified as an SD70M-2.

KCC&E JOINS EMP PROGRAM: The KCC&E announced on February 20 that they will become part of Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern's EMP intermodal container program, effective March 1, 2020. Other members of this program are the Canadian National, Canadian Pacific, Ferromex, and Kansas City Southern de Mexico.

Update for March 19, 2020:

COVID-19 OPERATING PLAN: The KCC&E has implemented a special pandemic operating plan in order to slow the spread of COVID-19 around the network. The KCC&E is paying very close attention to all of the warnings from local, state, and federal authorities, especially the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The railroad has asked those who are able to do so to work from home and practice "social distancing". All operations buildings, such as dispatcher offices, crew reporting locations, and other facilities, as well as locomotives, are being heavily supplied with cleaning and disinfecting products such as hand soap and disinfecting sprays. As well, to comply with the recent "social distancing" recommendations from the CDC, several of the railroad's facilities are being modified as needed. For those in areas under a lockdown/quarantine, KCC&E employees will be permitted to show law enforcement their employee IDs and will be permitted to go to work from there. There are many other plans going into place as I write this, but these are the main things that are happening now under the KCC&E's pandemic operating plan.

SD70MACe PROGRAM: SD70MACe rebuilds 14 and 17 have been completed and will be put in service at Chicago this weekend. SD70MACes 4 and 6 were also having finishing touches done to them at press time and are expected to be released either this weekend or next week.

STORAGE UPDATE: 3 more SD60Is and 2 C40-8us have been placed in storage, but they are undergoing inspections and will be put back in service when the inspections are completed.
