Didn't hear anything from Amtrak (365-Blue Water) or 251 this morning. Anyone know if/when they came through?

251 was early today, I barely caught them at the Fish Lake Rd. crossing between Holly & Fenton at 06:57. A single NS unit was leading, but I was too far away to catch the number. Fairly short train, 4 or so hi-cubes, the rest were autoracks.

Thanks, Dave.

E279 is leaving Flint westbound at 10:39am. Lead is IC 6058, trailing is CN 5999, and the conductor is a gal named Cheryl. This one's 9700 feet long, according to TD3.

Something eastbound is being held short of the Durand depot for E279 to pass, since both the Flint main and service are occupied.

CN maintainer is on a problem with the signals at Harrison Road (East Lansing/Trowbridge).

M279? what happened to the "E" prefix? did this train become a lower priority train? Is CN still running the A494 train? Keep up the great CN reports Mike!

Wow! thats half their train. Since this setout is in Flint, who will be talking these 62 cars to Toronto, or did i read that wrong?

Nope, I got confoozed by the shuffle. I meant behind 356. 394 had been in the lead, but was held at Durand and then followed 356 into the yard.

I was probably mistaken here; CN trains almost never call the letter prefix (as opposed to, say, CSX). 279's radio was weak--at first I was struggling to be sure if the call was 279 or 379, and I should have known better than to think I'd heard an M prefix. If it's always been E279, then I'm sure it was E279 today.

I've done a lot of Googling in search of information on CN train symbols, and turrned up very little. Apparently there used to be a PDF on the CN web site which laid them out; I found links pointing to it, but the document is no longer available. I'd be happy to borrow the knowledge of anyone reading this.

What I found said that M=manifest, Q=intermodal, C=coal. G=grain; further, that all Q's are 100s, all M's are 300s, all C's are 700s, and all G's are 800s.

What's an E? and are all E's 200s?

279 (E279?) had a 42-year-old SD40-2R out in front as it cleared Okemos Road. I'll post a photo when I get them out of the camera.

Train numbers prefixed with an alphabetic character indicating the type of service

F = foreign lines detours and running rights
G = 800 series grain trains
H = CPR origin, shared running
K = 500 series transfer runs
L = 500 series locals
M = 300 series long haul freight
P = 001-099 and 600 series passenger trains
Q = 100 intermodal trains Quality service
R = 900 series roadswitchers (IC lines only)
S = 700 series unit sulphur train
U = 700 series unit trains other than coal, grain and sulphur
W = Work trains

Train numbers are suffixed by one-digit numbers indicating where the train originated
