Living trackside going on 51 years, I have three separate roof top antennas that are hooked up to three different in house scanners, one in the living room, one in the dining room and one bed side. The clear sky mid teen temps overnight really brought the local traffic clear, not the skip out of state traffic you get with certain wind direction or foggy conditions. Have a 4th scanner as well that is hooked up to speaker systems throughout the house that when I am mobile...Antennas are so old I don't even remember what type...Better than leaving the AM-FM on all night.

Hi, I use the free on-line scanner for CSX West Michigan
For the CSX radio calls on the Grand Rapids sub, from mp CG95 to mp CG72, I use the free Broadcastify scanner for Saint Joseph Area Rail & Marine
I usually keep both of these on-line scanners running at the same time.
Thank you both for the reply. Sadly my HOA doesn't allow roof mounted antennae so I'm stuck figuring out another option, currently I stick my car mount antenna out my window but it doesn't pick much up, even in the < 1 mile I am from Brighton, even in the good conditions of the other night. And it's always nice to have some background noise while sleeping. I'll have to tune into those Broadcastify stations too, thanks for the info on those!

As a cyber security student, I have a few nice "hacker" radios (HackRF One and an RTL-SDR dongle), these are Software Defined Radios (SDRs) that can function as a scanner when plugged into the computer, using an app like GQRX. I'd like to host a station on Broadcastify, or even my own website when I get that set up, for the Eastern half of the Plymouth Sub. I estimate with an X50A antenna, I could hear the Lansing to Plymouth area, along with picking up GLC and possibly Durand.

D70611 going dead at Silver Lake Road crossing west of South Lyon after setting out a slew of cars in the Brighton siding again. Their time ran out at 11:00. Cleared Howell at 08:53 after running and in out of the siding with their 170 cars around the 67 cars parked on the main that D901 sat off on Saturday, still awaiting pick up by GLC. 3211+388 on the head end, DPU after the 101st car. Seeing 388 has been the D901 power all last week, CSX would be smart if this unit was set off as well in Brighton to keep the cars on air. (Not holding my breath on that) wait for another D901 crew to take it back to Howell.

Hi, is there some kind of indoor antenna that could be used for your scanner in a window that faces the direction of the track near you? For Broadcastify, they offer a Premimum Membership for $30 per year & with that there won't be any commercials playing you'd have to deal with & also gives you access to the scanner archives that store a year's worth of radio calls by date & in 1/2 hour increments. Edit: I looked up that X50A antenna, disquise it as a plant holder or as a climbing plant ;)

D706 (906?) through South Lyon @3:02. 3211 upfront with 388 YN2 trailing. Dpu was 738. Lots of refrigerator cars.
BL2-1843 had posted today at 11:04am: "D70611 going dead at Silver Lake Road crossing west of South Lyon after setting out a slew of cars in the Brighton siding again. Their time ran out at 11:00 am".

So, the re-crew most likely is running that train as D906-11.

So that's why they had cars parked across the Huron River Bridge in Island Lake State Recreation Area today.
