At high noon on a Saturday, you can imagine how many irate drivers there were today. Love to bike down and watch them seethe, and today was no exception.
Was observing this for the first time today. Was rather amusing the backup it created. The only thing that might help is they could try to shove the extra couple cars to clear S. Michigan maybe.. then at least the main in and out is cleared for the 10-15 mins they are getting the walk done then signal. While I didn’t stick around for most of the wait, I was on the north side and able to get into town for some milkshakes.. where the backup went past grand River.

D90008 arrived at Wyoming a short while ago. Sounds like they will be making a set out and pick up and will return to Lansing.

I don’t believe I’ve heard this symbol before.

D9xx series trains are typically recrews of regular D7xx local jobs. For example, a D900 would typically be a recrew of D700, which is the Holland west local. D907 would be the recrew of a D707. I would be surprised if a D900 were doing Grand Rapids East or Lansing related work, but it’s csx so basically anything is possible. 😜

Any idea what trains go through Wixom MI? I see them go by under I-96 all the time but I've never figured out how to track them.

Hey Lansing Railfan...I worked there (CSX) for 35 years and did the interchange MANY TIMES. We would meet their crew and do the swap. AIIRC the switches may have had DUAL LOCKS on them.
So been there done that. And you?

One more thing on the traffic backups in downtown Howell when GLC is setting off and picking up cars. One, there is no reason whatsoever that GLC can not back west of Walnut Street and all three crossings to clear traffic, regardless of waiting for permission from the dispatcher to pull into the siding when there is a pick up, or, being stacked in when there is not. While there is always someone riding the shove as far as Walnut street, unless the train is long enough they think they may get close to or beyond Highlander Way, nobody rides that shove beyond Walnut Street. On Saturday, after the conductor got off at Walnut, one, they stopped the train because of sticking brakes on a scrap tie empty, and two, even though the RN was aware of the impending move, it took 20 minutes for him to answer the call, thus the extra long time of sitting on the crossings.

Recently, GLC has been leaving their set off north of Howell on the GLC main, comes to Ann Pere power light, gets the pick up and takes it south of Howell before going back to get the set off. Very little wait at the crossings when they do it this way. I recall the moves you mentioned "Doc" when CSX went over onto the TSBY main, (back in those days) on their own way south of Howell to set off long set outs or pick up long set outs left there back then. This was all done with good coordination between TSBY/CSX and trainmasters in advance and worked well, back in the days when Armondo was conductor. Perhaps that was you who was also there when these moves were made. The crew on the GLC train on Saturday, long time GLC employees now, used to be CSX employees back then as well and are familiar with this territory when running the CP trains.
