There is an interesting article at https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features ... ably-worse about the crumbling tunnels beneath Penn Station in New York city.

There is too much info to quote from there. But especially, reading that article makes me wonder why folks would voluntarily live in a crowded area like NYC?

The real issue isn't so much that everyone lives in NYC (or even northern NJ, or Long Island). It's that Penn Station, unlike Grand Central, is also a through terminal. So trains don't just originate and terminate there, but pass through. You can get on Amtrak in Boston and get off in Philly. Or on in Mystic CT and off in Metropark NJ. Or even on in Essex Jct. VT and off in Baltimore. So much passenger traffic also passes through Penn, it just adds to the congestion and strain placed on the aging infrastructure/tunnels and the crush of people boarding and alighting.

The Farley building project will be a big (like, huge) improvement for the part of waiting for your train and arriving into NYC, but the article is right. If it's just a pretty postcard on top of a crumbling basement, it really hasn't solved the problem....
