This is posted by PianoMan at MichiganRailroads.com. It's a prototype circular yard in IA that services an ethanol plant. It looks like a model railroad :)

Makes sense to me Don but it seems to be overkill for an ethanol plant of that size.

More producers are building loops to increase efficiency. Several factors are mentioned in this article.

The Rock Island Yard in Blue Island, Illinois was/is a circle with switches of it into the yard. Saw it when the leaves were down when we were on CP trains going thru the area on the IHB.
Pull your train onto the circle and bleed the air and switch away! Same with building a train cept backwards!

http://industrialscenery.blogspot.com/2 ... -yard.html Interesting website buttttttt the yard they are shwoing is the RI Burr Oak Yard per my B&OCT Chicagp map I probably stloe from somewhere. The pics of the locos and the former buildings that housed the NRE builders I believe were in the circualr yard though. TRAINS had an article about Iowa Interstate a few years back that covered it.
And geee...do we wish the elevator at Williamston/Webberville had a setup like that? YOU BET!

The old Evans railcar shop across the river from Burr Oak?

CN's Taschereau Yard in Montreal is also worth a gander.
