Empty boxcars were the best ride. Hard to find.

If you enjoy watching modern-day 'bo's I recommend Stobe the Hobo's channel:

Very entertaining travelogues for those of us rail-minded... also he's a US Coast Guard-vet that was stationed in the Soo for a time.

I watched three episodes the other night. One was riding down to New Orleans, which is exactly where I rode in the summer of 62. I believe it was the old Louisville and Nashville. He even rode through Biloxi, Miss as I did. I was stationed in Biloxi at the air force base. I used to ride freights home on leave and back. I noticed the train highballed right through Biloxi. I couldn't get off either. Had to ride back from NOLA on a local. And as he said the mosquitos are horrible. Especially when the train stops for a meet or a signal, with swamp on either side of the tracks for miles. Times were different back then. Trespassing wasn't an issue. Nobody cared. Couldn't do it again these days. I even took showers in the crew room of several yard offices back in the day. Got cab rides and caboose rides. They'd lose their jobs today.
