There were no immediate reports of injuries, but witnesses said they could see flames from miles away.

Several witnesses reported hearing explosions after the Norfolk Southern train derailed.

A spokesman for the Beaver County 911 center said the train included about 80 cars, some of which were tankers loaded with liquid ethanol, an alternative fuel.

"Some of the cars were carrying liquid ethanol and some did catch on fire," the spokesman said.

Portions of New Brighton were blocked off to traffic and many residents were outside on the streets, trying to get information.

HazMat crews were responding to the scene of the accident, which occurred about 10:45 p.m.

The accident occurred near Third Avenue, near the Beaver Falls-New Brighton Bridge, an emergency dispatcher said.

News update pending.

KDKA) NEW BRIGHTON A major train derailment in New Brighton, Beaver County, sent flames flying through the air Friday night.

According to preliminary reports, the train was crossing a trestle between New Brighton and Beaver Falls, across the Beaver River.

The train had about 80 cars, with some of the cars apparently carrying ethanol.

After the derailment and explosion, some viewers say they could see the fire from miles away.

There are also reports that some of the train cars ended up in the river.

So far, there are no reported injuries.

Officials say a five-block area has been evacuated.

The streets affected in New Brighton are Second Avenue, Third Avenue, Fifth Avenue, Sixth Avenue from the Beaver River to Sixth Street.

The Bridge Street area in Beaver Falls has also been shut down.

Evacuated New Brighton residents are being sent to the United Methodist Church at Sixth Avenue and 11th Street.

Those on the Beaver Falls side are being sent to the Patterson Heights Fire Department.

Emergency officials say the fumes aren't dangerous and that the area is under evacuation for fears of more explosions.

(KDKA) NEW BRIGHTON Officials are re-evaluating their plan to let the remaining cars burn out after a train derailed and burst into flames over a railroad bridge in Beaver County late Friday night.

The initial plan was to let the cars burn out, but now there are renewed concerns that those cars could explode.

Fire crews are now moving further away from the still-burning fire as a precaution.

Officials are considering spraying chemicals on the fire, but no decision has been made as of yet.

The derailment left burning rail cars dangling over a river, authorities said.

Route 65 re-opened just before 6 a.m. this morning after being shut down overnight.

The eastbound, approximately 80-car Norfolk Southern Railroad train was carrying ethanol when it derailed above the Beaver River at about 10:50 p.m., according to Norfolk Southern spokesman Rudy Husband.

No injuries have been reported.

The American Red Cross, Hazmat and the DEP remain on the scene.

Approximately 600 people were evacuated from the area. The evacuation originally covered six blocks, but has since been expanded to 12 blocks.

People who are evacuated from New Brighton are being sent to the United Methodist Church at Sixth Avenue and 11th Street, while those on the Beaver Falls side are being sent to the Patterson Township Fire Department.

Emergency officials say the fumes aren't dangerous and that the area is under evacuation for fears of more explosions.

Update
http://kdka.com/local/local_story_296064020.html
KDKA) NEW BRIGHTON Rail traffic has temporarily resumed on in Beaver County where several tank cars derailed and exploded late Friday night.

The train was traveling from Chicago to New Jersey when it jumped the tracks on Friday. At least nine tank cars leaked ethanol - also known as grain alcohol - and caught fire.

No injuries were reported.

Norfolk Southern spokesman Rudy Husband says the railroad began running trains through the area just before 1 a.m. this morning, but the reopening is only temporary.

Crews still need to do more repairs.

Norfolk Southern is doing its best to make life easier on people affected by the derailment.

Evacuees in New Brighton are asked to go to the Norfolk Southern assistance center at the First United Methodist Church at 11th Street and 6th Avenue. The center will be open from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Friday this week.

People are asked to bring receipts for any costs that were incurred as a result of the derailment.

Businesses that suffered a financial loss as a result of the derailment are asked to call Norfolk Southern at 1-800-230-7049 between 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Norfolk Southern is also accommodating people who do not have receipts by offering a $150 per day inconvenience fee.

Crews continue to clean up the remainder of the derailment.

KDKA’s Alison Morris reports that tankers are being brought in to drain the remaining ethanol from the train cars in the Beaver River, while crews are also working to remove the remaining train cars from the tracks.

The fire finally burned out in the last of the burning train cars early this morning.

Only about 10 of the people who were evacuated over the weekend are still displaced.

While no injuries were reported following the derailment, residents were shaken up by the fire and explosions.

“I don’t even now how to compare it,” said Brian Tomlinson, of Beaver Falls. “It burst into flames, I called 911 and ran. Police came along as I was loading up my car and told us we were being evacuated.”

Route 65 and Route 18 are completely reopened to traffic in all directions today.

Officials are still investigating the cause of the derailment.
