Unread post by Ypsi »

I have been intrested in Hawaiian railroads since seeing the fictional Bug island rail in Model Railroader a couple years ago. The story if how they were wiped out and never rebuilt really. There are still some toures RRs on some of the islands, and if I ever visit I will ride for sure 8)

This is the newest Hawaiian railroad that is planned, its a light rail line in Honolulu.

HONOLULU – The state of Hawaii has informed the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation that it will receive more than $63.7 million in General Excise and Use Tax surcharge revenue from collections made in the third quarter of 2013. The funds collected for the project from July through September marks the highest quarterly total received by the authority to date.

“We now have a total of $1.14 billion in surcharge revenue collected for rail. This quarter’s revenue is the largest amount of General Excise and Use Tax funding for the project since collections began,” Authority CEO and Executive Director Daniel Grabauskas says.

The half-percent tax for Oahu, which by law can only be used for Honolulu’s rail system, began in January 2007 and is set to expire at the end of 2022. The surcharge is estimated to fund nearly 70 percent of the project’s cost, with the remaining balance to be paid for using federal funds. Last year, the project received $1.55 billion in federal funding.

The new line will have 21 stations and runs from Kapolei to Ala Moana Shopping Center in Honolulu, where it will split into spurs leading to the University of Hawaii at Manoa campus and Waikiki.
