WCOR

I had the chance to railfan the Wellsboro and Corning RR in upstate Pennsylvania.

SD40-2, former QNSL unit same number, working at Wellsboro

Rear view. Because of the extra large fuel tanks (4200 gallons), they were built with air tanks and compressor mounted on and in the rear housing. Would be fun to model.

View of the frac sand unloading area in Wellsboro. That is a former CN SD40-2 (6059) in front.

Control stand on the SD40-2 (309). Units are remarkably well kept and good running considering their age.

Nice pictures and enjoy the info. Thanks for posting Old Hogger. Those SD40-2's will be around for many years to come.

Was it because of the fuel tanks, or was it to keep those items out of the blowing snow that would accumulate under the running gear of a locomotive?

The air tanks were moved inside the end of the long hood to allow for the increased size of the fuel tank. Here is a photo inside the last door on the long hood showing the air tanks.

If you could compare this to a "regular" SD40 you'd really see the difference.

Note the "extra" fuel tank welded onto the top of the normal tank. These would make for some really fun kit bashing in HO scale.
