Vandalism suspected after CSX train derails in Ohio.

AKRON, Ohio — Vandalism is suspected in the derailment of a CSX coal train in Akron about 1:20 a.m. Monday, according to a story in the Akron Beacon Journal. There were no reported injuries. Both locomotives and 10 of the 103 coal cars in the train, bound from Chicago to Brunswick, Md., left the tracks.

Akron police lieutenant Rick Edwards said it appeared that vandals set two railroad ties across the track, derailing the train went it struck them. The ties had been previously placed there by the railroad to replace older ones. CSX is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of whoever was responsible.

Two teen boys admit derailing coal train

AKRON: Two boys, 17 and 16, were taken into custody Tuesday in connection with a CSX train derailment in May.

Police said the Akron teens have admitted to placing a railroad tie on the tracks May 8, causing the derailment of a train carrying coal in Akron near the Barberton line.

Two locomotives and 103 rail cars jumped the track, spilling tons of coal at 31st Street Southwest and Welsh Avenue. Damage was set at nearly $500,000.

The boys, who face charges of vandalism, are being held in the Summit County Juvenile Detention facility.
