Historic Bremen plans busy year
Fund-raising, depot project, other endeavors all on group's agenda

BREMEN -- Historic Bremen Inc. is starting 2005 with a big meeting and a busy agenda, members say.
The group, which is dedicated to preserving and celebrating Bremen's history, will hold its annual membership meeting later this month.
During the meeting, members will receive an overall report and a financial report, and will also select three people to fill open seats on the nonprofit group's board of directors.
After that, the group looks forward to a year that members expect will include fund raising, the moving of the Baltimore & Ohio railroad depot, a search for a "history center," and the recruiting of various volunteers to help with other projects.
The depot moving and restoration project is one of Historic Bremen Inc.'s big goals.
Members are planning to have the depot, currently on Center Street, moved east to a plot of land off Indiana 106.
Once moved and renovated, the depot building will serve as a welcome and information center, as well as a reminder of Bremen's rich history, says R.T. Henke, treasurer of Historic Bremen Inc. It should feature various train-related memorabilia, he says.
But in addition, Henke says, members will be looking for space the group can use as a history center, to possibly store and display materials that reflect various aspects of the town's history.
And in addition to all that, fund raising will be necessary to help pay for the depot moving and restoration project.
Finally, Henke says, Historic Bremen Inc. welcomes volunteers to help on a number of projects and tasks.
These range from conducting oral history interviews and gathering photographs and various other items of historical interest to helping catalog items collected.
Henke and his wife, Virginia Henke, say much of the work on such smaller projects is done by board members and members of various committees that Historic Bremen Inc. sets up.
While the group currently boasts more than 70 members, the Henkes say, only a few people often do much of the work, and more help is always appreciated.
"We have really put together what is needed at this point," Henke says. "We need people to pick up the ball and run with it."
