Boy badly injured after hitting train detonator with hammer: reports
July 2, 2012 - 7:24AM

A Sydney teenager is in a stable condition after he was badly injured in an explosion, reportedly caused by hitting a train detonator with a hammer.

Emergency services were called to a house on Aleta Way, Seven Hills, about 6.30pm on Saturday, where they found a 15-year-old boy with a badly injured hand and arm.

"There was one major explosion and the bomb squad did attend and they removed a number of other items which they took to a local reserve where they were detonated safely," Inspector Maureen Deagan said yesterday.

"If these are devices from the railway, then we would be worried that there are others out there."

A NSW Police spokeswoman could not confirm media reports the boy had used a hammer to hit a train detonator.

The detonators are laid on rail lines to warn track workers of approaching trains.

However, the police spokeswoman said several detonators had been stolen recently.

"We are investigating whether these thefts involved young people."

Police could not confirm reports he lost his left hand.

A spokeswoman for the Children's Hospital at Westmead said the boy was in a stable condition last night.

That must be what we in the states would call torpedoes, eh?

Yep. Pretty much non-existant anymore here stateside. At least CSX has ceased with their use, and I believe removed them from the rule book. Fun to play with though. I just wouldn't be using a hammer on one. Knuckle works better, you can drop it from a safe height. Don't ask me how I know. Guys would put them under someone's tires if they bumped them first out. Put one in an open knuckle when making a coupling to scare the crap out of someone. Use them on the end of a track while shoving 'blind' to know when you were getting close to the end.

Practice Safe CSX
