Homemade shutter release

Unread post by BB »

Hey J T, got one of those shutter releases for the 350D? I found a thread over on the Canon forum on how to make your own shutter release so I went to Radio Shack and bought a black electronics project box, 3/32" stereo audio jack, flip switch and about an hour's work made what's in the picture. Already had the two push buttons and about 8ft of telephone cord at home.

Image

The role of the switches go, first push button is for auto focus while the second is for the shutter and the flip switch is for shutter in bulb mode which when flipped on takes the pic till it's flipped off for those really LONG exposures. Anyways thought I'd share this very simple and easy to build shutter release for the Canon Rebel XT for those interested.

Fits in my pocket nicely, too. :D

Hmmm...so how do you do a bulb exposure with your camera in mirror lock-up mode (which I use a 100% of the time when shooting landscapes)?

My night shots range from 15 seconds to up to 3 minuets.

HAHA

Old school for sure. lol but I wanted the challenge of making my own.

I never used mirror lock-up before but then I set it to that and am able to push the shutter button for it to lock and flip the switch to take the picture in bulb mode. I haven't learned really what mirror lock-up is, so now is that so the mirror doesn't "shake" the camera when it flips before taking an exposure shot?

You don't happen to have the URL handy for that post on the Canon forum do you? I wouldn't mind building one of these myself :)

You are correct. MLU is helpful in eliminating any extra shake when you're at slower shutter speeds in low-light conditions, typically when taking landscape shots. It's nice because it cuts the timer down to 2 seconds as well on the 350D, instead of 10 (which I'm REALLY impatient for when doing landscape/nature photography). I disable MLU when taking action shots.

Yeah I discovered that 2sec delay while using MLU.

Thanks for the links. I probably have all that stuff already, so it won't cost me much to build :D Does anyone else with the Digital Rebel XT always accidently hit the timer button? Usually I don't notice it until I'm trying to shoot a moving train, and the shutter won't go...aggravates me to no end ;)

Yes, I have bumped the timer button before only to be aggrevated when I push the shutter button and don't hear the click. First thing I look for is the timer going...and sure enough, bumped it again!

Another thing that bugs me about the 350D is how easy the eyepiece falls apart. The rubber kept coming out of place, and occasionally when I put my camera in my bag, the whole piece would slide off. I lost it because it fell off when I was shooting last week (right after I took the picture in my avatar, actually). VERY poor design if you ask me.

Hmm...haven't had that problem (yet). Just the timer button is the only thing that aggrevates me ;) Do you pop the eye piece off and put the cover over it when you're not using it?

The rubber around the eyepiece kept coming out of its platic frame when I would take it in and out of my bag, or even if I'd hold it too close to my eye. Recently the whole eye piece would slide off as I removed my camera from the bag (I can only lay it a certain way when I have the 100-400 lens mounted, thus making the back of the camera and eye piece rub up against in the inside of the bag when I'd pull it out. This action would pull part of the rubber off the plastic eye piece frame, as well as sometimes pull the whole eye piece off. This is how I ended up losing it. I didn't realize it came off and fell on the ground).
