My Canon 18-135 IS is pretty good all around for a non-L and a nice zoom range for most shooting.

It's a toss up between the 50mm f/1.2 and the 70-200mm f/2.8

Awesome D.O.F. on the 50, and the 70-200 is just a great lens even though it does get heavy. The "go to" would probably be the 70-200.

I have three; 28-80, 55-200, &70-300.

28-80 gets the most use.

My 20-300 L Canon lens I have found to be the mose versatile, unless I want a very wide angle shot then I have to change it.
Love all class 1 railroads in USA and Canada, and short lines in michigan

I want my Pentax FA 35mm f2.0 back. 35mm on full frame/film
fits my natural perspective. When I saw a shot and brought up
my camera with the 35 I never had to move forward or back.
I suppose if they ever did a 24mm f2 for APS-C I'd have to get it.
(the 21 is so close but I'm not there... yet.)
I haven't lost my mind, it's on tape backup here somewhere...

For the type of shooting I do, I find my Canon 24-105 to be my most versatile lens, and it's on my camera 95% of the time.

The only lens that I had for a few years was my Canon 24-105L IS. Great lens with a perfect range. It's even better now that I'm on a full frame. If only there was a 24-105 f/2.8L IS, though.

Being that we haven't had the T3 for to long. I was looking at a 28-300mm lens.

I never leave my home without my 70-200 f/2.8L II IS lens from Canon. It's expensive, but it whips the crap out of most primes in those focal length ranges (except 85L, 135L and 200 f/2L of course). The lens AF's super fast on a 1DX and the IQ is unbelieveable.

Well, please understand that I have to work photography in as a second job to afford this stuff. So if you love free time, there's pros and cons to these purchases :). I'm learning perhaps a few more cons than pros.

Well, I decided to go with a 24-105 instead of the 70-200. While I enjoy the versatility of the 24-105, I'd still love to have the 70-200. Would I do things differently if I could go back four years to that purchase? Hmmm...

I did at one time have the 70-200 2.8 non-IS, but I returned that and got the 100-400. I really wanted a longer reach at the time. Now...reviewing THAT purchase, I should have just stayed with the 70-200.

I think the 24-105L is a very good piece of glass. I had it but I never used it and had to face reality and get rid of it (I still cry time to time). To that end, that money went towards funding the 70-200 lens we're talking about, so really I couldn't have had both anyways. It can get into an ugly game of wants vs. needs vs. how much money you can spend :).

Because I do so much sports instead, I looked at my EXIF data from last month and just about the shortest focal length I ever shot at was 135mm. In the rare event that I ever get time to do railfan photography again, I shot quite a bit between 50 and 70mm, where the 24-105 lens would come in so handy. Sigh.

I like the new Tamron 18-270 that's on sale now for $449.00
I've used it both on my model RR and shooting CXS and NS with excellent results.
I even shot a pair of Red Tailed Hawks eyeballing me for lunch while I was
shooting the CSX west of Lapaz IN.

I've got the Tamron 10-24 and the Canon 10-22. The Canon blows the Tamron out of the water and because of that I will never buy (waste money) on another non-Canon lens again.
