I don't get it!

Hello,
I was really hoping this would make it, but it got overprocessed. :(

All I did was boost the fill light, a little recovery, and added more contrast. What could I do differently?

I got this one on the day before and it looks the same way!

The sun and the area surrounding it look horrible. The caboose shot doesn't have that issue since the sun technically isn't in it.
