Well they're both unlevel, they could both use some CCW rotation. As for the cropping, it looks like the first one is cropped too squarely. You're cutting the train off in the second one and it's also fairly square from what I can tell. Could just be the monitor I'm on though.

I like both shots Eric. I have to agree with Y@ with the rotation, and maybe just me but both seem a little "dark" almost cloudy conditions. Great composition with D716 though.

Sorry to say this (and don't take it as a knock on your photo Eric, because it's not) but it's just a standard sunny wedgie. Nothing special about the composition. Don't sugar coat things for people James, it's not a good way to give tips to people.

So you like the wire touching the top of the train along with that ugly pole and utility tower growing out of the rear of the train, one of them even cut off?

That doesn't make much sense...if you want to take an "above average" railroad image, the train AND surroundings should be the focus. You can't just pick one. That will usually make you a sucky photographer. Take these examples.











Shooting for the train will make you a great wedgie shooter. Shooting for the location will make you a great railroad photographer.

Ahh, ok. But you said "composition" which encompasses the entire image (aka "surroundings"), not just the subject.

Another one I remember from a pretty good rail photograher is "Don't think of it as a train picture, think of it as a picture with a train in it."
Both are excellent advice and will make us better shooters.
