B&W HELP

Not sure what to do or where to begin.

The shot is overexposed as it stands. The snow is blown in most places, and the histogram is right side heavy. Was this a conversion post process, or from the camera B&W?

The darks do not seem to be quite dark enough either.

Maybe throw up the original to peek at?

This was a post process B&W. All I did was desaturate the color. The color version got dinged for Bad Color. It was a cloudy day shot.

For a B&W conversion, don't desaturate. Use the channel mixer instead. Select monochrome and then adjust the red/green/blue sliders accordingly.

What I tend to do is make three layer copies, and each copy I'll convert to each of the three single channel monochrome "colors." USUALLY the red turns out to be the primary one I'll go with, and depending upon lighting and whatnot in the image, I'll use a layer mask to bring in certain sections of the other two layers. It may sound complex, but it's really quite a simple and quick process. What you end up with is an image that is much more rich in black and white tones, as opposed to a desaturated one that doesn't have much contrast.
