Effective now, I am hijacking this thread and will be using it as a notepad to keep track of CN's SD40-2 and SD40-2Ws and their retirements. Additional news about other CN retirements is of course still welcome.

I'll start with the spartan cab SD40-2s, since there are a little small in number compared the SD40-2Ws.
5364 - Active
5365 - Deadlined (?) (Arrived Markham 11/24, no movement since)

NOTABLE SD40-2Ws

5300 (Class unit) - Wrecked/Retired 1991
5363 (Last SD40-2W built) - Active (In Battle Creek as of 12/7/07)

* These units have been on the CSX system, and the most recent trace report shows when they were last on the CSXT network. As a result, I cannot find their present locations
** This unit shows as departing Argo, IL back in October, but it apparently never arrived anywhere?

Gregg, info on the 5300, here is why you cant find any info on her....
Dave C
"SD40-2(W), class GF-30r, built 1978
originally purchased by Ontario Hydro to provide power on CN trains hauling coal to thermal power plants
purchased from Ontario Hydro 1988
CN 5300 was the lead unit in a consist ahead of 5130 and 5418, pulling a westbound intermodal train on 5 Aug 1991. At the highway crossing at Kinsella, AB, the train struck a truck carrying light crude oil. Nothing derailed, but the train crew and truck driver were all killed. 5300 was gutted by fire. "

retired 23 Sep 1991

Well, I know a lot of DM&IR stuff has been being retired soon, but it may be just the beginning of what is to come. It sounds like CN is sending 21 IC SD40-2s up to the DM&IR to replace all of the remaining SD38s, SD38-2s, SDMs, and any SD40-3 numbered over 409. This will probably be the final purge of DM&IR power. CN is only keeping SD40-3s 400-409, and out of those, only 403 is still in maroon. The DM&IR power could very well end up facing a similar fate to the WC SD45s, the scrapper. Truely the end of a era coming.

Honestly, I don't see why the CN would scrap units if they still run? Could someone please shed some light as to why? I just don't get it. If it runs, why scrap it?

I know, it really doesn't make any sense. It didn't make sense with the WC SD45s or the SD40s that were scrapped last year either. CN is power short, but yet they have at least 5 tracks filled with deadlined engines that they could easily bring back into service until more new power arrives. They could at least get a few more months out of the ex-GCFX SD40-3s. I don't know why CN is retiring them months before their leases expire. I would also think the DM&IR SD40-3s are suitable for other service also. I wish CN would just reassign the DM&IRs to other service. I also don't know what is going to happen to the two B&LE SD40-3s assigned to the DM&IR.

Well, the IC SD40-2s are not going to be going to the DM&IR after all. IC 6006 had many problems while up there and the crews had a meeting with CN management at Proctor about it, and CN made the decision to call off the IC invasion. The DM&IR requires straight air braking and dymanic brakes also help out, and the IC 60XXs have neither. The DM&IR power is not safe, however, because CN is now looking for more suitable replacement power for the DM&IR engines. Also, DM&IR 202, 411, 417, and 869 (still in B&LE paint and number patched for DMIR) have been retired and are on the way to Woodcrest.

Well, DM&IR 202, 411, 417 and 869 should be at Woodcrest by now or close to there. They are now scrapping engines right at Homewood again, and three Savage C39-8s are being scrapped.
