CSX slug question

Unread post by David Collins »

I was looking back at a video I shot of local F776 in Waxhaw, NC waaaay back in 2017. The leader of the train was a former GP30 reconfigured as a road slug, CSXT 2216 (now retired and sitting in Waycross).

I noticed that under the cab, instead of RDSLUG that the 2300 series slugs have, it’s classified as a RDMT. What does that stand for?

RDMT stands for ROAD MATE, which I think it how CSX originally referred to their GP30 and GP35 slug units. Later RDSLUG came into use. I don’t think there is any technical differences between a RDMT and a RDSLUG. But perhaps I am wrong and someone will correct me.

Incidentally, are any of the CSX road slugs still operating on the system, or have they all been sold or stored? A few were still kicking around earlier this year although I think the last one that was actually seen in Michigan was around the summer of 2022, I think.

Their numbers have gone down but many are still operating around the system

Roadmate was the name Seaboard had for their slugs that were paired with GEs back before CSX. I never heard the 2200/2300s referred to as "Roadmate", they were always "slugs".
Not that obvious

CSX referred to the slugs with cabs (the former GP30, GP35, and GP38/40 carbodies) as RDMT. The yard slugs are/were classified MATE (ex SBD units), SWMT (ex Chessie), and MT4 or MT6 (ex Conrail).
