Unread post by Saturnalia »

Fresh off the grapevine, CSX has notified dispatchers that by the end of the year, all desks will be relocated to the central office in Jacksonville.

In or out, can't they make up their minds? They moved many of the desks out of J-Ville to get the dispatchers closer to their territories so they could be more familar with the crews and such. I had heard also that the dispersal was due to having the system down due to a couple fo hurricanes in the early 2000's. They wanted to decentralize these desks so they could keep at least the nothern tier of states moving. Now they are moving them all back down south. let's see how long this lasts.

While that is the story foamers like to think, it is not true. The Jacksonville breakup was a union busting move, nothing more. There is no need to have a dispatcher closer to their railroad, it doesn't make a difference. At the end of the day it is more expensive to have 9 dispacthing offices over 2.

As an aside, the OP is wrong.

1. The company has not given notice yet.

2. Not all of the desks will be moving to Jax.

The company has now given notice, and still not all desks will be moving to Jacksonville.

This is fine until someone drops off a bag of explosives in their lobby, again. All your eggs in one basket. Never a good thing to do.

What about BNSF and UP? Both have almost entirely centralized dispatch centers, and seem to do just fine.

For what its worth, when Sanborn left the CSX to come to Conrail the VP of Operations on Conrail (Hasselman) wanted to centralize all the dispatcher desk. Sanborn instructed Hassleman to go spend an entire weekend in Jacksonville observing and talking to the dispatchers and if upon his return he still wanted to centralize then it would be done. As a result of that visit, Conrail stayed with regionalized offices.
