Any DM&IR engines out there?

Any DM&IR engines out there?

Unread post by atrainguy60 »

I'm curious, are there still any active Duluth Missabe and Iron Range engines out there on CN? I know that there are some B&LE engines out there, since there was one earlier this year in Flint. But I have yet to see a DM&IR. Have they all been repainted or sold or scrapped?

I think there is one on CN, and any others that remain fully in DMIR paint are at museums. There are a couple SD's that are in DMIR colors on some short lines as well.

DMIR 403 is still kicking https://heritageunits.com/Locomotive/Detail/DMIR403

There was a unit that went for a reprint and "mysteriously" ended up back in DMIR paint instead of CN colors a handful of years back. Not sure if 403 is that one or not.

Well lets hope that it "mysteriously" remains in DM&IR paint for a while! Thanks for the info! I'm glad to see at least one is still on CN.

No. 215 was active earlier this year, and was supposed to join No. 403 on a September excursion, but was sidelined with an oil issue. To my knowledge, it hasn't run since, making No. 403 the last active DM&IR painted unit on CN. It did team up with the Lake Superior Railroad Museum's No. 193 on that excursion:

I hope that the "Two Remaining" DM&IR units will stay on the "Iron Range" for a while! The rest are in CN paint and/or "Retired!" There are more "Bessemer" units running there! Check out my photo album from a Canon® T70™ film camera that I mailed last year! He (and David Schauer) have taken some good photos with my 35mm camera for me! I want to travel there though!!!!

OK, here's what the guy from the "Iron Range" said, 12-3-16:
"The 215 is still working Proctor Yard and the 403 is on ore trains out of Two Harbors."
This means that both remaining DMIR units are still operating!!!!

As far as DMIR painted locomotives out there that aren't on the CN go, the Pierre Farmer's Elevator association in Pierre, SD had LTEX 310, a SD-M in DMIR paint, or at least it was as of July, 2015. I doubt it's been painted since then.
