NS 1072 Engine Failure

Unread post by Trainz1210 »

I saw on heritageunits.com that NS 1072 (Illinois Terminal) was in the shops in Irondale, AL about a week ago due to a major engine failure. Anyone know anything about this?

Heard the NS cut the repair budget. Anything having a failure is getting scrapped. Trying to cut $60 million from the budget. Scrapping saves the budget from unnecessary repairs, and it's a "profit" when they sell the metal. If they make little souvenirs from the metal, they could sell them for $20, $30 if you want it mounted on a plaque made from ties off the Peavine.

Lolz. Scrap value on those units isn't likely to be anything near what NS owes on the SD70ACes/GEVO though, whether the units are owned outright, or leased. And a major failure on a fairly new engine doesn't get written off in the same fashion a wrecked unit can be (it's a single component and maybe some associated parts that need replacement, not a bunch of major parts plus a frame and/or a cab, etc. as would be required in the case of a wreck). If it's not something NS can blame on the builder, or an outside 3rd party, it may be a while before it's back in service (the lost revenue from storing it for a while is significantly less than the remaining projected revenue the unit would be projected to generate during it's time in service on NS). Scrap value would be a drop in the bucket of lifetime revenue.

Considering the current economic climate and the supposed future of coal, by the time 1072's back in service, a new coat of CP Action Black paint will probably be applied to the unit after that prime mover is replaced.

You've obviously never taken a creative accounting class. You can make the books show anything.

darn engine is probably still under warranty they'll swap that prime mover out in a couple of days with one sitting there ready to go and send the core back to GE for the next unit.

And then GE will send it to Muncie, IN where the EMD plant is... as it's an SD70ACe Kerry...

Heritage units.com also said the Illinois Terminal was only in for a PTC upgrade.
