There is a possibility that only the cabs, and not the entire locomotive is being scrapped out. GE did say they, not that they will, had plans to rebuilt the CSX C40-8s with newer and different cabs for reselling. This is what NS is doing with the former U.P. units they are rebuilding. Cabs only are being scrapped out by the dozens near Cresson.

As far as age, the C40-8s were built 1988-1990. They're almost 30 years old...the "expiration" date for GEs.

I remember when the (ghost toasters) first arrived. Yet the older EMD's live on!

Grapevine reports say that Harrison intends to store all Dash8s, Dash9s, SD70s, SD60s and SD50s (all variants thereof).

This would give us the following roster report, if these were all retired tomorrow. Not saying this is likely or anything, just a test case to play with some numbers.

All Roster Changes:
All C40-8W retired
All C40-9W retired
All SD70AE retired
All SD70AC retired
All SD70M retired
All SD60M retired
All SD60I retired
All SD60 retired
All SD50-3 retired
All SD50-2 retired

New Current Paint totals (pct), change:
YN3B: 1256 (37.09%), -165
YN3: 1698 (50.15%), -531
YN2: 432 (12.76%), -241

Built for totals, change:
CSX Transportation: 2379, -545
Seaboard System: 437, -69
Conrail: 215, -234
Chessie System: 347, -61
Other [not from CSX tree]: 5, -26
Misc Predecessors: 5

Builder totals, change:
General Electric: 1782, -425
Electro-Motive: 990, -498
CSX in-house: 221, -14
Other: 393

Average Fleet Build Date*: 1996.86, +0.69
Total Units on Roster: 3386, -937
Total Available Horsepower: 11,263,900, -3,619,000

------------

So while this is JUST a "worst-case" test of GRAPEVINE reports, it does show some interesting numbers which many of you are likely enjoying. Note that the changes would be evenly split between GE and EMD, with a 25% cut in total units and total horsepower. Conrail would be the biggest hit by predecessor, by far, due to the SD60s and C40-8Ws.

Again, all theoretical. While retirements can pretty much be expected, many of these units (thinking particularly the SD70s) could simply be stored long-term. Who knows. But what we do know is that CSX is grossly overpowered, and has been since the 300-unit GEVO order was completed and fewer than 300 units were retired. In the last five years, CSX has only retired the C40-8 and B40/20-8 fleets, which was fewer than 200 units.

I shouldn't have to add that CSX isn't going to be signing for new orders anytime soon!

The average build date on a C40-8W is in 1992. The C40-9Ws were built in 1993. The SD60 fleets also average to 1992. The SD50 fleet averages to 1986, and the SD70 fleet to 2001, the newest of the bunch by far.

Remember folks, the 90s weren't as recent as they used to be! 25 years on the Dash8s, Dash9s and SD60s, and 30 on the SD50s is NOT young in locomotive years. Stuff built after SD40-2s just weren't built to the tank and interchangeable standards are they had been before as technology became much, much more complex and computers entered the picture. Sure, pre-1980s cars are pretty much mechanically bulletproof as well. That doesn't mean your newest Big 3 product is, however!

It appears as though the cost control under the "new regime" is beginning to take its toll on new locomotive repaint discoveries. Just 8 repaints is all we've got this month, all YN3 to YN3B editions.

Sounds like the Citirail GEVOs are being removed from lease to CSX, and returned.

I'm not really sure why they were brought on, or why they're leaving so soon. Kinda strange.

Just something about the stored power on CSX right now, which I would think is pretty darn high right now.

I am wondering if there is any insight as to how much of certain classes are in storage now. I do know that the entire 7300 Series is stored, along with most of the AC6000CW class (I know 5016 is an exception since it was in Deshler as the second unit on Q342-31 this morning).

Thanks,
Thomas Boyer

Almost all of the SD60 variants are also in storage, along with large numbers of SD50s and SD70s.

Basically everything except the ES40DCs ES44AHs SD40s AC4400s and a handful of Dash 8s and 9s. For the life of me I can't figure out why the AC4460s are in storage the Crews absolutely love them

GE Widecabs, except the Dash8s, are popular still.

On the EMD side, don't forget the legions of GP38-2s and GP40-2s, along with the Road Slugs, and at least half the SD50, SD60 and SD70 clans.

AC46CW/Hs are oddballs...they're less reliable. Cheapest stuff to run is being kept, the expensive stuff stored and retired.

Alcos and FMs could also pull the communism out of China...but only when they weren't being shop queens.

Don't forget Baldwins!
Just had a train the other day with 682,8218,2614,4536 trailing, all their stacks were capped.
