To work around that, CSX sold the SD40's to MK and MK in turn provided SD40/45 cores to be rebuilt as SD40-2's for CSX. Most of the of those were of UP & SP Heritage.

Good question.
I have classed those as built for CSX. With rebuilds that change model designation, I have considered them to be "new" for the purposes of built for, built by, and build year.
Thus 8439-8488 are classed as SD40-2s built by MK in 1989, for CSX.
Likewise, the 8305-8436 are classed as SD40-2s built by CSX in 1989, for CSX. As these were completed by CSX internally.
I have been contemplating modifying this structure to differentiate between units existing as-built, and rebuilds. No decision on that yet, I'd have to figure out how to overlay it and haven't given that too much thought yet.
Hope that makes sense. I figure these major rebuilds make essentially new units for our purposes of tabulating age and who ordered them. There are certainly other ways of accounting it, but I find this to be the most insightful.

Rumors saying 4402 is totaled (frame damage) and 5000 may be sent to GE.
