Just out of curiosity, how are the first MK SD40-2 rebuilds classified in the "built for" figures? Due to an agreement with the unions that represented the CSX workers at Huntington, CSX could not simply send SD40's out to Boise and have them come back rebuilt. To work around that, CSX sold the SD40's to MK and MK in turn provided SD40/45 cores to be rebuilt as SD40-2's for CSX. Most of the of those were of UP & SP Heritage.

Good question.

I have classed those as built for CSX. With rebuilds that change model designation, I have considered them to be "new" for the purposes of built for, built by, and build year.

Thus 8439-8488 are classed as SD40-2s built by MK in 1989, for CSX.

Likewise, the 8305-8436 are classed as SD40-2s built by CSX in 1989, for CSX. As these were completed by CSX internally.

I have been contemplating modifying this structure to differentiate between units existing as-built, and rebuilds. No decision on that yet, I'd have to figure out how to overlay it and haven't given that too much thought yet.

Hope that makes sense. I figure these major rebuilds make essentially new units for our purposes of tabulating age and who ordered them. There are certainly other ways of accounting it, but I find this to be the most insightful.

Thanks! Interestingly I didn't realize the batch of rebuilds was that "small" in numbers (for some reason I was thinking it was 100 units).

Damage doesn't look too extreme. I bet both will return. Curious if the Diversity In Motion decal will be reapplied.

Doubtful, I know at least one of the three had the doors replaced altering the decal

Rumors saying 4402 is totaled (frame damage) and 5000 may be sent to GE.

Frame damage for any locomotive will usually do it.

CSX 4384 and SD40-3 rebuild has been painted up in YN3B with a modification to the nose portion of the paint scheme. It has "Clinchfield" painted across the front of the nose with Clinchfield emblems paintes on the sides of the nose. It will apparently lead the Santa Train this year.

Guess you can add this as a "one time deal" CSXT SD40-3 #4384 dressed, rather sloppily, as a "Clinchfield" unit. R. Flanary photo from Facebook. Honestly, it looks like crap.

Hot off the wire:

CSXT 1700 SD33ECO 3250 Hp. Formerly CSXT 8123 SD40-2.

Get ready for a new 1700 series of SD33ECO rebuilds. Cab type and other details as yet unknown, beyond the above.

Excellent. We're already going to be filling out the rest of the order this month, up to 3474. As expected, nothing shows in the computers beyond 3474, so it looks like the order was indeed for 300 GEVOs even.
