Re: Everything/Anything CF&E thread...Part 3
Anyone know the history of how they acquired the GP40x? There were only a few built and it surprises me one would end up on a regional/short line when there is an abundance of more standard locomotives. The same reason you think a short line wouldn't want one is pretty much why Class I's don't want...

You like that trend, but think about in a year or two when it is nothing BUT orange. You're going to wish just once could get cascade green or maroon leading a train.alittlevanwerty wrote:So far G&W has wiped out Cascade Green (on the I&O) and brought in orange, blue and maroon. I like this trend!

Re: Super long CN trains.
On UP at least, it doesn't necessarily count "drawbars as one". Most 3 or 5-pack wells, even though they all share the same reporting marks, are counted singularly. Each tub is assigned a letter, with "A" and "B" being on either end in regular boxcar fashion, having an A-end and B-end (handbrake is ...

Re: Super long CN trains.
If we're talking "super long trains" why are we even talking about articulated cars or number of cars? Does it matter? It's the length of the train that matters. When I get on my train, I really don't give two sh!ts about how many cars it is or if I have any articulated equipment. I look at the leng...

Re: Super long CN trains.
CSX_CO I don't believe your statement is necessarily true. CN runs 12,000 ft trains on their single track section of the Flint sub. The shortest siding is Lapeer at 10,000 feet or so. As long as most of the sidings will fit them. UP Villa Grove Sub (Villa Grove-Chicago) has an 8,000 foot restrictio...

KRR 3803 is now on the TPW, I believe in Peoria, with the KRR 3802. Both are not running.

Re: MMA Crude Train Derails and Explodes
So, bottom line, and what I was trying to say (albeit with a few poor analogies) is the MMA boxes weren't necessarily loaded on the MMA.

Re: MMA Crude Train Derails and Explodes
Just because an industry receives boxcars owned by a certain railroad doesn't mean the car originates from that same railroad. They are assigned into a "pool". If they did, you'd be seeing autorack trains with the same road name on all the cars. Could be, but because the cars a) belong to a shortli...

Re: 7/30/13 UP symbol help
Hello all. We were in Elmhurst, IL yesterday (7/30/13) and I was wondering if anyone could offer up some symbols for a few trains. I'm not expecting all of them because I know it is a lot but I was wondering if anyone could offer up a few. Thanks for any help! UP 4024 West. Short Mixed. LPJ02 UP 49...

Re: MMRR Z627 Log
Last I remember both Geep 9's had P3s on them. I remember it being very easy to tell when one of them was in the lead. 73 had a prime 920/S-3-L. That one went to 3836 when 73 was parked in place of the S-5-T. The frankenstein they were building recently was for 73 when that goes back into service u...

Re: MMRR Z627 Log
The most recent horn on 73 was (I believe) an old Prime 920, which came off MMRR 180. Before it was on 180, have no idea where it came from. Here is 73's horn: http://www.rail-videos.net/video/view.php?id=11421 Here is 3836's horn, which coincidentally is 73's old horn: http://www.youtube.com/watch?...

Re: Railroad Employees and railfans: Growing issue?
To elaborate on this topic a bit more I will say that there ARE railroaders out there that think they are vigilantes. They may not be as friendly and fair as were the ones in this video. Not a growing issue really, just a few rotten apples in the bunch. But this goes for any line of work. Police off...

Re: Railroad Employees and railfans: Growing issue?
I think the interactions in the video you linked were absolutely fair and appropriate on the behalf of the South Carolina Central RR. Who I'm assuming was their trainmaster (in the blue w/white stripes shirt) was very polite, fair and friendly, as was the employee in the F350. Just as the trainmaste...

Re: Brake Questions
To add to the bit about EOTsI believe the GCOR rule states anything over 40mph, work trains or any trains traveling on a heavy grade over a certain length need an EOT. There are two way and one way EOTs. One ways will just relay brake pipe pressure at the rear. Two way will allow you to place the t...

Re: Brake Questions
I know many local trains operate with flags instead of EOTs, is there a train length or speed at which EOTs are required? No length restriction but speed and tonnage are factors. I'm not certain of other railroads, but on UP, the only trains that can leave a terminal without an emergency-enabled EO...
