Re: IORY Updates

Gerald Grain is building a new facility between Delta & Wauseon. Its west of the Northstar complex, on the north side of the NS tracks. NS will be the sole rail service for that. However, there's also talk that Bunge is looking at sites along the I&O in the Delta area for a new Soybean processing (m...

Re: DT&I/GT traffic 1980/1 vs 1985ish?

http://dti.railfan.net/Articles/Articles.html Has a listing of DT&I symbols in place in 1980. By 1985, the biggest change was that the Springfield Trains were gone and the end was near for anything south of there to Jackson/Ironton etc. In the 1985-90 timeframe, the service to Napoleon (Campbells S...

Re: CN Pontiac-Orion Line Operations

Three drawbacks to this. 1. Someone has to carry that inventory cost on their books - and having money tied up in inventory that doesn't "turn" fast is never viewed as a good thing. 2. With JIT processes, Defects/Quality issues can be spotted, Isolated & corrected much more quickly. Using the 100 ca...

Re: C&O- Ohio River to Toledo

Fostoria to Toledo is still strong (not nearly as much coal however) with trains that turn to go/from Toledo. I believe there's still at least one freight in each direction that goes/to from Columbus from Willard. South of Columbus though is where the line took the biggest hit. I don't believe there...

Re: TOFC/ Piggyback Trains in Saginaw

A little background on pricing - since I did it for a living for a while. A product/service can be priced properly - and no one will buy it, if that is the wanted outcome. Likewise, a product/service can be priced improperly - with large numbers of people buying it, and you not making any money on i...

Re: Railfanning at Plymouth/Romulus/Wyandotte in the 1990s

Late GTW era on the former DT&I saw at least 6 trains a day south of Diann. There was a piggyback train in each direction, the NS run-through in each direction & the GT manifest in each direction. Add in whatever extras and grain to the A&B at Riga & to Metamora, it made for respectable railroading.

Re: Palace of Auburn Hills

I'd guess that Ford Romeo stopped using rail when it stopped being a tractor plant? I doubt that CN was leaving it in for the circus train. I'd welcome any corrections, but I'm guessing that as long as the Orion Assembly is open, the branch will stay in place. Don't think for a second that CN has co...

Re: How busy was the B&O before the Conrail split?

Which is why the NS ended up purchasing the former PRR west of Fort Wayne. It was a cheap & easy way to get a "second main" to add capacity to the NKP. (the NKP west of Fort Wayne is a different animal than east of "the Fort", much curvier and with shorter sidings) Even with only two places to pass ...

Re: How busy was the B&O before the Conrail split?

The ex NYC being TCS with two main tracks was one of the key factors, along with having Elkhart yard. Along with PC wanting to downgrade the former PRR main, it was also part of the "Pro-Rail" proposal that was cooked up back when NS made their push for Conrail in the mid 1980's. (as was - amazingly...

Re: How busy was the B&O before the Conrail split?

The 12 regular trains a day west of Deshler is entirely accurate. I lived in Fort Wayne from 1993-1996 and spent quite a bit of time up in Garrett and you had the 4 pig trains (135,136,137,138), general freight trains 381,382,383,384 that went through Deshler, 500,501 to/from Cincy via Deshler and 5...

If the rails are rusty, there will be activation issues - doesn't matter if the equipment is new or old.

Re: NS Peavine talk

Signal work for stored cars? why? Given the infrequency of the movements, for grade crossing protection just move under rusty rail rules (flagging every crossing) and be done with it. Nobody is coming up with the money because the Captain has the bad information. From what I have read on the CCET Fa...

Re: Napoleon, Defiance and Western: The Definitive Thread

The crossing is on a section of 4 lane that was done in the mid 1960's as the US6/24 bypass around Napoleon. ODOT didn't feel the need for an overpass then either. The only way one will see an overpass there is if the Midwest high speed passenger service ever comes to pass as the ND&W to the I&O dia...

This was one of the leases that CSX did in the aftermath of the Conrail split to help get their finances back in order (the ex PRR from Crestline to near Chicago was one of the others). As part of the prep work for the Conrail split, there was a connection track built at Sidney Ohio that made the mi...

If you look at the aerial view, the line looks to have extended to one of the sediment/silt dumping sites on the shorefront that material from dredging the Maumee River shipping channel were deposited at. If the intent was to take the dredged material via rail somewhere or what I don't know.

Re: NS Peavine talk

Regarding "home road" coal hoppers - at least among NS & CSX, there's two factors at work. 1. as mentioned in a previous post, why pay someone else to store them when you can save the storage fee by shoving them up some unused mine lead in WV/KY etc? 2. I'd be willing to bet that a sizable part of b...
