Re: Work in Grawn?
While the apple crop had a part in the money issues, the bigger issues came from them overselling their production capacity on the apple side and then not being able to deliver. The cherry side of the business has always been stable.

Re: Lake Michigan Shipping
Intermodal is defined as the use of two or more modes of transportation to deliver one shipment. In the case of this article, they are talking truck - ship - tuck. This is already occurring with the SS Badger. Look at the number of truckloads between Central Michigan to/from Wisconsin and Minnesota....

Re: East Jordan Iron Works
EJIR exists in Sunfield due to the shortage of trucks (flats and vans) near East Jordan. Also, all the scrap in in southern Michigan. So they run scrap north on 8 axle trailers and finished goods south on the same trailers. And the distance between the two facilities fits well in the trucking hours ...

Re: Holland spur upgrades by CSX
Chemtron shared the Taylor Warehouse (now TLC.) spur. Chemtron is now gone. The white boxcar is on the spur that across Douglas to the long gone warehouse used by Heinz and removed in the later 70's. Chriscraft had at least for tracks into their building and a little red switch engine that got aucti...

Re: West Michigan Railroad History
Both Pioneer engines were parked a couple hundred feet east of the CSX interchange behind a factory last Thursday. If the tracks went to the west, they could run a casino train. And the guy still has Jeep FC-150's for sale on CR-681 south of I-94. I have always wanted one.

Re: Ye olde Holland reefer car
Ya got me by a couple years Dok. I can also recall C&O working the businesses along Ottawa Ave in Holland on Sunday mornings. From Heinz south to the Texaco facility, they would work 5 businesses. There was a 3 track yard just before Heinz by the old sugar factory where they would get ready for the ...

Re: Ye olde Holland reefer car
The spur turned south and crossed both Douglas and Howard Streets to the Vac_A-Tac building on Lake Macatawa. Later Heinz took over the building. I can remember the spur being in place in the early 70's. But I never saw a train switching it. I do recall trains switching Parke Davis along with Chris ...

Re: Interesting story from Delray area.
There are corrupt people working on the railroads that share info with thieves. New Orleans is one of the worst places for this. Electronics, booze, cigarettes, ect all move with high security bolt seals that require a large bolt cutter to remove. Many also have cable seals looped around the top of ...

No one has said what type of meat products they will be making. Lunch meat? Chicken nuggets? Do any other meat plants in Michigan use rail? Be more specific and it will be easier to figure out if there is any hope of future rail service. If anything, look for inbound bulk raw materials in hoppers or...

Dispatches were located in the north end of the 2 story building which I think was called the store house. Just east of the RIP tracks. Now torn down. I think the move to JAX took place 26 years ago.

Re: GTW west of Coopersville
The Coopersville and Marne volunteers had dreams of rebuilding to the west in the early years. Other than maybe a more scenic ride, there is no reason or money to build west even if you could reclaim the right of way.

Mason County Co-op purchased Indian Summers of Belding, MI and took on that name maybe 10 years ago. All production was transferred to Ludington. Cherry Growers and Indian Summers are stand alone co-ops. Both market their products through a company called Cherry Central and on their own. Indian Summ...

Cherry Growers has exited the juice and applesauce business. They are retreating to their original core business of cherries. Who needs a railcar of frozen cherries?

Re: Railroad and shipping container question
Most reefer containers / trailers have a 100 gallon fuel tank and run in start/stop mode. Thy are good for about 10 days before needing refueling. Refrigerated containers and trailers are only routed on hot/fast trains. Trains only stop for the 1000 mile check between Chicago and the west coast. For...

Re: Cherry Growers in Grawn going under
Long story and the driver has it wrong. They are exiting the applesauce can and cup business. Those lines have been sold. CG will continue to run them until the machinery can be physically moved in about one year. They will remain in the cherry business. Doubtful they will ever load a railcar again.

He sells two brands of hot tubs. Nordic is made in Grand Rapids and Jacuzzi is made in Connecticut. Most dealers struggle to purchase a truckload at a time. So I don't ever see them taking a railcar full. And the other big question, does the shipper have a way to load a railcar? Side note, I arrange...
